Zhi Zhi Goes to Sea

Little mouse Zhi Zhi wanted to go on an adventure at the sea.

He found a big piece of paper and started cutting and folding, making a little paper boat.

He used chopsticks as a mast, hung a handkerchief as a sail, and pushed the little boat into the river—off he went!

The wind blew, and the boat chugged along, Zhi Zhi was off to sea!

Oh no, the waves in the river were quite strong. A wave crashed in, and the paper boat flipped over.

With a loud splash, Zhi Zhi was trapped underneath the boat.

A waterbird saw him and picked him up, bringing Zhi Zhi back to the riverbank.

No worries, Zhi Zhi thought of another idea. He gathered a pile of mud, kneaded and shaped it, forming a mud boat.

He set up the chopsticks as a mast, hung the handkerchief as a sail, and pushed the little boat into the river—off he went again!

The wind blew, and the boat chugged along, Zhi Zhi was off to sea!

But the mud met the water and slowly, slowly melted away. With a splash, the boat sank to the riverbed. Luckily, a turtle was swimming back to the shore, and Zhi Zhi climbed onto its back, returning to the riverbank.

Is there still a way? Zhi Zhi found some flour, kneaded it into dough, shaped it into a little flour boat.

He set up the chopsticks as a mast, hung the handkerchief as a sail, and pushed the little boat into the river—off he went again!

The fish in the little river caught the scent of the flour; one pecked, another bit, and soon a big hole was chewed out, with water rushing in. Zhi Zhi fell into the river.

Fortunately, a piece of wood was floating on the water, and Zhi Zhi grabbed it, swimming back to the riverbank.

These difficulties couldn’t stop Zhi Zhi. This time, he invited a water otter to eat cucumbers and asked him to help build a little wooden boat.

He set up the chopsticks as a mast, hung the handkerchief as a sail, and pushed the little boat into the river—off he went!

Not afraid of the wind, not afraid of the waves, not afraid of the little fish biting, the wooden boat really set sail.

Chug, chug, chug, the little wooden boat followed the river’s flow, carrying Zhi Zhi to the sea!
