Stories: Wooden Anniversary Love Words

After work, I received a call from my husband: “Honey, today is our fifth wedding anniversary. Come home early, I’ve already made dinner and I’m waiting for you.”

As soon as I hung up, he called again. When I answered, before I could speak, I heard him talking on another phone. Because of his job, my husband uses two phones: his work phone can never be turned off, and his personal phone can never be turned on during important work. He must be talking to a woman!

And he was using a voice I had never heard before, so tender it could drip honey. He said he missed her, that her hair was beautiful, her eyes were big, and she was the love of his life. Furious, I hung up the phone, and I felt my heart shatter like a piece of glass.

Since our marriage, I had always seen him as my ultimate destination, silently fulfilling the duties of a wife: caring for the elderly, raising our son, and maintaining good relations with our neighbors.

To have a good life, I worked tirelessly between my job and home without complaint, even working until twenty days before giving birth to earn money for our son’s formula. With our efforts, we bought a car and a house, and he was promoted from an ordinary clerk to a mid-level manager.

Naively, I thought I was on a bright, golden path, but his accidental redial made me feel like that path had turned into a dark dead end with no hope of light. My heart ached, and I wept bitterly. In my memory, my husband was not a man of many words.

Besides saying “I do” and “I love you” at our wedding, he almost never said any sweet words to me. I didn’t mind before because his reliability, diligence, and gentleness were far more important than sweet words. But now, I sadly realized that he wasn’t incapable of saying sweet words; he just never said them to me. He spoke them beautifully to another woman.

I decided not to let it go and hurried home to confront him. When I opened the door, I saw my husband waiting for me. The dining table was filled with a sumptuous dinner, and candles were lit around it. Seeing me enter, he immediately came over happily: “Why are you so late? I’ve been waiting for you for so long.”

I replied grumpily: “What are you waiting for me for?”

My husband put his arm around my shoulder and led me to the dining table, then sat across from me. Clearing his throat, he said, “Honey, you know I’m not good with words and can’t say sweet things, but today is our wooden anniversary, and I have to say this to you. You are the most beautiful and gentle girl I’ve ever seen. Your hair and your eyes have always captivated me. Honey, you will always be the love of my life.”

These words were exactly what he had said to the other woman. I looked at him coldly: “Did you say that wrong?”

He said puzzledly: “It can’t be wrong. I’ve practiced dozens of times.”

Suddenly, I realized that what I had overheard was just a rehearsal, and what he was saying now was the live performance. I couldn’t help but laugh. Because of the misunderstanding, these words sounded even more touching.
