wolf stories for kid: The Old Wolf at the Edge of the Carrot Field

Grandpa Shuigen had been pulling up carrots in the vegetable field all morning and felt extremely hungry. He picked up two full baskets of carrots and slowly walked out of the field.

Suddenly, Grandpa Shuigen saw, under a big tree at the edge of the carrot field, a hungry old wolf with a shrunken belly.

Startled, Grandpa Shuigen quickly put down the baskets and raised his carrying pole high.

But the old wolf said, “Don’t hit me, I won’t eat you. I just want to eat some carrots.” The old wolf’s voice was very small, and it was drooling constantly, looking extremely hungry.

“An old wolf wanting to eat carrots?” Grandpa Shuigen scratched his head, puzzled. “Could it be that this old wolf is so weak from hunger that it can’t eat people? But if I give it carrots and it regains its strength, what will happen then?”

Grandpa Shuigen quickly picked up the baskets and walked briskly towards home.

“Don’t go… give me a carrot…” The old wolf immediately howled, looking very pitiful.

Grandpa Shuigen’s heart softened. “Oh, this guy’s howling sounds just like a mosquito’s buzz; it looks like it’s about to starve to death. How can I just watch it die without helping?” He put down the baskets again, took out a fresh, juicy carrot, and cautiously handed it to the old wolf, saying, “Here you go! But remember, I have a carrying pole, so if you gain strength and try to eat me, I’ll beat you to death with it!”

The old wolf didn’t respond and started eating the carrot voraciously. Unexpectedly, after just three bites, there was a “pop,” and the old wolf turned into three little white rabbits!

The first little white rabbit said, “I always said that eating carrots would change us back!”

The second little white rabbit said, “It’s all our fault for being greedy and eating the poisonous mushrooms planted by the wicked sorcerer, which turned us into a terrifying old wolf.”

The third little white rabbit said, “But our hearts remained those of rabbits; we never wanted to eat meat. We almost starved to death.”

After saying this, the little white rabbits continued to eat the carrots. After finishing, they jumped into the baskets and said to Grandpa Shuigen, “You saved us, we will belong to you forever!”

Grandpa Shuigen was overjoyed but said, “You should go back to where you came from and live a free life.”

The three little white rabbits reluctantly left Grandpa Shuigen.
