Unity and teamwork story for children
A Magpie, a Rabbit, a Monkey, and an Elephant lived together in harmony, as if they were close brothers.
One day, the Magpie brought back a fruit tree seedling from the mountain. The Rabbit quickly planted the seedling in the ground, the Monkey regularly fertilized it, and the Elephant often watered it. In this way, the seedling quickly grew into a big fruit tree, blossomed, and bore a tree full of fruit.
One day, the Magpie flew over the top of the tree. “Oh, the fruit is ripe!” it thought. “I brought the seedling here, so I should be the first to taste the fruit.” It tasted one, “Hmm, so sweet,” then tasted another, “Hmm, so fragrant.” It continued eating and from that day on, it flew to the tree every day to eat the fruit.
The Monkey found out and felt unhappy: “Without my fertilizing, could this tree have grown big?” So it started climbing the tree every day to pick and eat the fruit.
The Elephant also found out and was displeased: “Without my watering, could this tree have grown big?” So it started using its long trunk to pick and eat the fruit every day.
Only the Rabbit, who was small and couldn’t climb or fly, could only watch helplessly as the Magpie, Monkey, and Elephant ate the fruit.
As the tree grew taller, even the Elephant’s long trunk couldn’t reach the fruit anymore. It argued with the Magpie and the Monkey. They quarreled for a long time and finally decided to ask a wise person to judge the situation.
When they met the wise person, they all started shouting and complaining at once. The Elephant said the Monkey was being unreasonable, the Monkey said the Magpie was being unreasonable, and the Magpie said the Elephant was being unreasonable.
The wise person said, “One at a time, please.”
“I’ll go first, I’ll go first!” the Magpie jumped in. “I brought the seedling back from the mountain. The seedling grew into a tree, and the tree bore fruit. Wise one, don’t you think I should be the first to eat the fruit?”
Just as the Monkey was about to speak, the Rabbit hopped in front of the wise person. Ah, it turned out the Rabbit had also come along.
The Rabbit said, “You’ve all eaten the fruit, but I don’t even know if it’s sweet or sour. Wise one, the Magpie brought the seedling back, but it was I who planted it in the ground. The seedling grew into a tree, and the tree bore fruit, but they only cared about eating the fruit. I could only watch helplessly.”
The Monkey scratched its head and said, “I was the one who fertilized it!”
The Elephant lifted its trunk and said, “I was the one who watered it.”
They started arguing again. The wise person said, “Ah, so that’s what happened! Do you know what this fruit tree is called? Do you know what kind of fruit it bears?”
“No, we don’t.”
The wise person said, “This tree is quite peculiar. At first, you all worked together harmoniously, and it grew and bore fruit. Now, you’re only focused on eating the fruit and are even quarreling. This tree, well, this tree…”
The wise person stopped speaking at that point. The Magpie asked, “What do you mean? What happened to the tree?”
The wise person said, “Go back and see for yourselves.”
The Magpie, Rabbit, Monkey, and Elephant returned and saw that the leaves of the tree had withered, the fruit had rotted, and the tree was nearly dead.
They were all very worried. The Elephant quickly watered the tree, the Monkey quickly fertilized it, the Magpie saw many bugs on the tree trunk and hurriedly caught them, and the Rabbit didn’t sit idle, cleaning up all the weeds around the tree.
Day after day, the tree sprouted new leaves, blossomed, and bore a tree full of fruit again.
The Magpie, Rabbit, Monkey, and Elephant were very puzzled. They ran to the wise person and asked, “Wise one, please tell us, what kind of tree is this? What kind of fruit does it bear?”
The wise person said, “Think carefully, and you will know. This tree is called the Unity Tree, and the fruit it bears is called the Unity Fruit.”
The Magpie, Rabbit, Monkey, and Elephant understood. They returned to the tree, and never again fought over the fruit. They picked the fruit and shared it, giving the most to the Elephant since its belly was the biggest. They continued to live together harmoniously, like brothers, and the Unity Tree grew even bigger, bearing even more Unity Fruit.
