Two Mice Go Traveling

Mouse Kabeng and Mouse Kala were a pair of good friends who had never met each other. They got to know each other through a message in a bottle.

One day, Mouse Kabeng, who lived upstream by a small river, found a piece of paper and wrote the following message: “I am Mouse Kabeng, living at No. 2, Garden Village. Here, we have vibrant flowers blooming all year round. Would you like to be friends with me? To the friend who receives this letter, please reply!”

Then, Mouse Kabeng put the letter into a transparent bottle and placed it in the river to float downstream. Mouse Kala, who was fishing downstream, happened to discover it. She retrieved the bottle and found the letter inside.

So, Mouse Kala wrote a reply to Kabeng: “I am Mouse Kala, living at No. 3, Forest Village. Over here, the forest is full of tall trees. Can we be friends?”

After writing the letter, Mouse Kala sent it through the forest post office, and Monkey the Postman delivered the letter to Mouse Kabeng. This is how Kabeng and Kala became good friends, exchanging letters to communicate.

In the crisp October air, with high skies and light clouds, Mouse Kabeng thought, “I should go traveling. Why don’t I write to Mouse Kala and invite her to travel together? We could meet up as well!” But then Kabeng reconsidered, thinking, “What if the place I want to go doesn’t interest Kala? I’d better travel on my own. I’ll write to Kala and share my travel experiences when I get back.”

Mouse Kala also wanted to invite Mouse Kabeng to travel together, but she worried that Kabeng might have a different travel route in mind. So, she decided to travel on her own too.

When they both returned from their travels, Mouse Kabeng and Kala each wrote letters sharing their travel experiences.

Upon reading each other’s letters, they both laughed. It turned out they had traveled to each other’s villages! Mouse Kabeng, after reading Kala’s letter, realized how beautiful Garden Village was. How had she never noticed before? She had always wanted to travel elsewhere.

Mouse Kala also realized how lovely Forest Village was. Why hadn’t she known before? She had always wanted to travel far away.

Kabeng and Kala wrote letters to each other and agreed to travel together to both Garden Village and Forest Village next autumn!
