Story: Theodore the Mouse and the Talking Mushroom

In an old oak stump, there lived four good friends: a lizard, a frog, a turtle, and a mouse named Theodore.

The lizard proudly said, “Every time I lose my tail, I can grow a new one.”

The frog said, “I can swim underwater.”

The turtle said, “I can tuck myself in like a box.”

“And what about you?” they asked the mouse.

Theodore, who was always scared of everything, blushed and said, “I can run.”

The companions burst out laughing, “Ha! Ha! Ha!”

One day, a leaf fell from the tree, scaring Theodore out of his wits.

“Owl!” he thought, quickly running to find a place to hide.

Luckily, he found a huge mushroom to hide under. He was so frightened that he didn’t notice the mushroom was as blue as the August sky. Theodore hid there for a long time. He was exhausted. Just as he was about to fall asleep, suddenly…

A strange sound startled him: “Ker-plop!”

Theodore looked around, his little heart pounding. But everything was quiet. “I must be dreaming,” he thought, returning to the shadow under the big mushroom.

He closed his eyes lightly and started to doze off when suddenly the sound rang out again: “Ker-plop!”

It was the mushroom! Theodore was so excited that he forgot to be afraid. He stammered, “Can you talk?” The mushroom didn’t answer, but after a while, it made that sound again. And then again. Theodore immediately understood that the mushroom wasn’t really talking.

It could only say, “Ker-plop!”

So, he had an idea.

He ran back to his friends. “I have something important to tell you,” he said mysteriously. “Not long ago, I discovered a talking mushroom. It’s a truth mushroom, and I’ve learned its language.”

He led his friends to the edge of the woods.

The blue mushroom was growing there.

Theodore commanded, “Mushroom, speak!” The mushroom said, “Ker-plop!”

Theodore’s friends were astonished. “What does that mean?” they asked. “It means,” Theodore replied, “that this mouse should be revered by all animals, high above the rest.”

This news quickly spread. His friends made a crown for him. Animals from afar came, presenting garlands.

From then on, Theodore was no longer scared. Whenever he traveled, the turtle would carry him, with a cushion of fresh flowers on his back. Wherever he went, he was revered by all the animals, high above the rest.

One day, he and his three friends went on an outing, arriving at a hill they had never climbed. The frog hopped ahead. Suddenly, he stood on the hilltop and shouted, “Look! Look!”

The valley below was filled with hundreds and thousands of blue mushrooms! The chorus of “Ker-plop, Ker-plop” echoed through the valley.

Faced with this sudden scene, they were all dumbfounded. Theodore knew he should say something, but he didn’t know what to say. He just stood there, trembling.

Then his friends erupted in anger. “You lied!” “Fraud!” “Imposter!”

“Scoundrel!” “Villain!” “Swindler!” Theodore turned and ran, faster than ever before.

He ran through the woods, past the blue mushroom, and beyond the old oak stump.

He ran and ran…

After that, his friends never saw him again.
