The Watermelon Prince
Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived an elderly couple. One day, when the old woman was working in the fields, she saw a strange watermelon growing on a wild melon vine. She brought the watermelon home.
At noon, the old woman was about to take lunch to her husband working in the fields when she suddenly heard a voice say, “Mom, let me take the lunch to Dad.” The old woman was startled and looked around carefully, only to find that it was the watermelon talking. The old woman was both surprised and delighted. She quickly handed the food and water to the little watermelon.
The little watermelon hopped and skipped to the field, and it called out loudly to the old farmer, “Dad, it’s time for lunch.” The old farmer looked down and saw a watermelon carrying the food and calling him.
The old farmer happily said, “Alright, child, just wait a moment. Let me lead the ox to the river for a drink before I eat.” “I’ll take the ox to drink,” said the little watermelon. It nudged the ox’s leg, making the ox walk along the path. When the ox finished drinking, the little watermelon nudged the ox’s leg again, but it was kicked into the river by the ox.
The little watermelon floated down the river for a long distance before crawling ashore. After getting ashore, the ox was nowhere to be seen. A shepherd told him that the ox had run into the king’s fields, and the king’s men had taken the ox and locked it in the barn. “How could the king take my ox? I must go and settle this with him,” said the little watermelon. He immediately set to work, gathering branches and leaves to make a two-wheeled cart. He sat in the cart and had field mice pull him to the palace to find the king and demand the return of his ox.
On the way, the little watermelon met a wildcat, a wolf, and a fireball. He let them shrink themselves and enter his ear, and together they went to the palace to confront the king.
The cart rushed into the king’s council hall, and the little watermelon shouted at the king, “King, give me back my ox.” The king saw a watermelon shouting and couldn’t help but laugh. He ordered his men to catch the watermelon and lock it in the chicken coop.
The little watermelon called out loudly, “Wildcat, come out now, it’s your turn to show your skills.” The wildcat leaped out of the little watermelon’s ear and bit all the chickens to death.
The next day, the little watermelon went to the council hall again. “King, give me back my ox, or you’ll be in trouble.” The king again ordered his men to catch him and lock him in the sheep pen. The little watermelon shouted, “Wolf, come out, it’s your turn to show your skills.” The wolf immediately jumped out and bit all the sheep to death.
On the third day, the little watermelon went to the king again, demanding the return of his ox. The king was furious and ordered his men to lock the little watermelon in the palace basement. As soon as the little watermelon entered the basement, he shouted, “Fire, come out, it’s your turn to show your skills.”
The fire made a roaring sound, and the palace caught fire. The palace was in chaos, and the king was also panic-stricken, asking, “What’s going on? Who set the fire?”
At this moment, the little watermelon appeared before him, admitting that he had set the fire. The king and queen hurriedly pleaded with the watermelon, promising to return the ox and asking him to put out the fire.
The little watermelon calmly said, “It’s too late now, unless you marry the princess to me, otherwise, the fire cannot be put out.” Seeing the fire growing stronger, the king and queen had no choice but to agree to his demand.
As soon as they agreed, the fire was extinguished, and the watermelon suddenly split open, revealing a handsome young man inside. After the prince and princess got married, they sent a lot of gold and silver treasures to the elderly couple, allowing them to live a good life.
