The Sweetest Cake in the World
On the weekend, Tongtong and her mother were shuttling between several extracurricular classes—painting, dancing, piano… they were so busy that they didn’t even have time to go home for a meal. Instead, they grabbed a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant.
In the evening, Tongtong’s grandmother, who was out of town, called. Tongtong answered the phone.
Her grandmother asked, “Did you have any cake today?”
“What cake? Mom’s afraid I’ll get a toothache, so she doesn’t let me eat sweet things,” Tongtong said, feeling a bit wronged.
“Well, did you celebrate your dad’s birthday?” her grandmother asked.
Tongtong didn’t know how to answer, so she handed the phone to her dad. Her dad took the phone and quickly said, “Yes, yes, we did.” Tongtong noticed that at some point, her mom had quietly gone into the kitchen and started working.
Tongtong saw her mom taking out flour, eggs, butter, and other ingredients. She knew that her mom was preparing to make a cake. It had been a long time since she had eaten a cake made by her mom.
“Mom, I want to help too!” Tongtong quickly went to wash her hands.
Her mom said, “It’s my fault. I’ve been so busy that I forgot about your dad’s birthday. How about we make a birthday cake for him together?”
Making a birthday cake for dad? That’s wonderful! Tongtong helped her mom whisk the eggs, and when her mom wasn’t looking, she sneaked a few extra spoonfuls of sugar into the flour.
“I want to make the sweetest cake in the world for Dad,” Tongtong thought.
As the cake slowly baked in the oven, a sweet aroma filled the air. It was getting late, and Tongtong had to go to bed. Before going to sleep, she told her mom, “Tomorrow morning, make sure to tell me if it’s sweet or not. I need to know before I eat it!”
