The Sorceress’s Clay Horses
The sorceress wanted to go to the grassland, but it was far away, so she decided to create a horse to ride.
She made the horse by molding a small clay horse, digging a kiln in the ground, and putting the small clay horse inside to fire it. As she fired it, she chanted a spell: “Clay-ee, clay-ee, clay-ee, horse-ee, horse-ee, horse-ee…” She chanted for a very long time, and then there was a loud “boom!” as the kiln exploded, and a large real horse sprang out, running around the sorceress. The sorceress also jumped up, trying to get on the horse’s back.
All of this was seen by the short sorceress. The short sorceress had just flown back from the city. She flew with a pair of small wings on her feet, flying with great effort, and landed on a tree, just in time to see the sorceress creating the horse. The short sorceress was as excited as the sorceress and jumped down to tell the sorceress that such a good horse could be sold for three dollars in the city. If she made more, she could sell them for even more money!
This made the sorceress hesitate. She thought, why not make a few more horses and go to the grassland after selling them? The sorceress quickly molded three more clay horses, put them into the kiln, and started chanting the spell… Thinking it was not enough, she molded five more and started chanting… Still thinking it was not enough, she molded eight more…
“Clay-ee, clay-ee, clay-ee, horse-ee, horse-ee, horse-ee… One horse three dollars, three horses nine dollars, horse-ee, horse-ee, horse-ee… One horse three dollars, five horses fifteen dollars, clay-ee, clay-ee, clay-ee… One horse three dollars, how much for eight horses? Clay-ee, clay-ee, clay-ee…” The sorceress chanted for a long, long time, knowing exactly how much she could earn, but not a single real horse sprang out with a “boom!” And the real horse, tired of waiting, had already galloped off to the grassland…
The sorceress now regretted her mistake. She should not have thought about money while chanting the spell. No matter how the short sorceress tried to persuade her, she refused to stay another minute. She wanted to chase after her lively, spirited real horse. Since she had no horse to ride and couldn’t fly, she had to rely on her two legs. The sorceress was also willing to punish herself.
The sorceress had to walk for eighteen days to cover the distance a horse could run in one day, meaning she would never catch up with the real horse, but the sorceress didn’t care. After all, she was heading to the grassland.
“Clay-ee, clay-ee, clay-ee, horse-ee, horse-ee, horse-ee…” She chanted as she walked briskly, maybe out of habit, or maybe chanting the spell gave her strength. She walked with her head down, chanting the spell.
One day, she heard the sound of galloping behind her. When she turned around, a group of horses was following her. Weren’t these the clay horses she had molded?
“Oh! My spell worked again!”
