The Rabbit’s Escape

One day, Rabbit and Fox were working together in a field, planning to plant some vegetables to share. The sun was scorching, and before long, Rabbit was tired.

He wanted to rest but was afraid Fox would call him lazy, so he gritted his teeth and kept working. Suddenly, Rabbit screamed in pain; his hand had been pricked by a thorn. It hurt a bit, but he was happy because now he had a legitimate reason to rest.

He went to rest under the shade of a tree and discovered a well. The well was very deep, and there were two wooden buckets hanging from the well frame, going up and down. “Ah, it must be so cool in there, a perfect place to nap,” Rabbit thought.

Rabbit happily jumped into one of the buckets, which immediately sank down, while the other bucket rose high. Soon, Rabbit’s bucket reached the water’s surface, and he was too scared to move. “What should I do now? How can I get out?” he wondered.

Meanwhile, Fox had been secretly watching Rabbit. “Hmph, Rabbit must be sneaking off to eat something tasty. Where did he go? I need to check,” Fox muttered to himself.

Fox went to the well and peeked in, seeing Rabbit sitting motionless. He shouted, “Hey, Rabbit, what are you doing down there?”

Rabbit suddenly had an idea. He said, “Oh, Brother Fox, I’m fishing! We’ll have delicious fish soup tonight.” “Fish in a well?” Fox was doubtful. “Yes, really, there are so many. For the sake of fish soup, come help me!” Rabbit shouted. The thought of fish soup made Fox’s mouth water. He looked into the well again and said, “But how can I get down? The well is so deep.”

Rabbit replied, “It’s simple, just jump into the bucket on the well frame.” “Wow, so many fish! Come down and catch them!” Hearing this, Fox grew even more anxious. He jumped into the bucket.

With a splash, the bucket Fox was in slid down to the bottom of the well. Fox was confused and disoriented. Meanwhile, Rabbit, in the other bucket, rose up from the bottom of the well. He was overjoyed.

As the two buckets passed each other, Rabbit waved proudly at Fox. Fox realized he had been tricked, but it was too late. Rabbit jumped out of the well, laughing, and said, “Goodbye, dear Brother Fox. You can wait at the bottom of the well for the fish to bite!”
