The Rabbit Dislikes the Night

The rabbit likes the daytime but dislikes the nighttime. As soon as the sky starts to darken, the rabbit grumbles: “The day is too short. Once it gets dark, I can’t see anything and have to go to sleep.”

A strange voice responds, “The daytime is long enough.”

The rabbit looks up but the sky is too dark to see anything clearly. “Who are you?” the rabbit asks.

The voice answers, “I’m the owl. The day is long enough. I can only come out at night to play and catch mice to eat. If the day is too long, the night is too short, and I won’t get enough food or playtime.”

The rabbit says, “I just don’t like the night.”

The owl says, “I just like the night!”

The rabbit and the owl start arguing, getting louder and louder.

When they get tired of arguing, they decide to find other animals to judge.

They find the wild ox, who says, “The rabbit is right; the day isn’t long enough. Without daylight, we can’t see where the tender grass is, and our stomachs will be empty.”

The rabbit is delighted to hear this. Proudly, he says, “See! See! The wild ox doesn’t like the night either!”

A little bird in a tree overhears and chirps, “No, no! The day is long enough. Without the night, we wouldn’t dare to sleep. When it’s dark, our enemies can’t see us, so we can sleep soundly.”

The owl perks up. He says, “See! See! The little bird likes the night too.”

The rabbit and the owl go to find more animals to judge. Some animals say the day is long enough because the night allows for good sleep. Others say the day isn’t long enough because a long day means more time to do things.

The rabbit and the owl, not convinced, start arguing again.

The rabbit says, “I like the day, the day, the day, the day…”

The owl says, “I like the night, the night, the night, the night…”

The rabbit doesn’t stop for breath, continually saying, “Day, day, day…”

The owl can’t even swallow his saliva, relentlessly saying, “Night, night, night…”

The rabbit and the owl keep saying their words, refusing to stop.

When the sky just turns dark, you can go to the big tree in the forest to listen. You will hear the rabbit and the owl still arguing endlessly.
