The Path to Moon Pond

In a distant place, there is a Moon Forest. Inside the forest, there is a Moon Pond. Every day, many little animals walk along a path to the Moon Pond to drink water.

One day, a big bear came to the forest and walked onto the path.

The big bear saw a row of small bamboo leaf-shaped footprints on the ground and knew a little chick was ahead. He thudded along and quickly caught up, grabbing the little chick and saying, “Move aside! Move aside! Only I am allowed to walk on this path!”

The little chick was so scared it didn’t dare make a sound. Then, the big bear saw a row of fan-shaped footprints on the path and knew a little duck was ahead. He thudded along, quickly caught up, and shoved the little duck aside, saying, “Move aside! Move aside! Only I am allowed to walk on this path!”

The little duck was terrified and quacked in panic.

The big bear then saw a row of plum blossom-shaped footprints and knew a little dog was ahead. He thudded along, quickly caught up, and kicked the little dog aside, saying, “Move aside! Move aside! Only I am allowed to walk on this path!”

The little dog whimpered in fear.

The chick, the duck, and the dog gathered together, all worried. “The bear has taken over the path, and he’s drinking all the water from the Moon Pond. What should we do?”

The smallest of them, the chick, came up with a clever idea.

The next day, the big bear was once again walking down the path to drink from the Moon Pond. He was puffing out his chest, proud and boastful, “Look how tall and strong I am! This path is for me alone, and the water is mine alone to drink!”

Just as he was feeling smug, the big bear suddenly stepped into a hole. Panicked, he looked down and saw—oh no!—a massive footprint. It was so big that even with both his paws inside, there was still space left around them!

The big bear looked ahead and saw a long row of such enormous footprints!

Frightened, the big bear nervously walked forward a few steps, thinking, “Who could leave such big footprints? A giant monster or a dinosaur? Will it grab me, push me, or kick me away?”

The more the big bear thought about it, the more terrified he became. His legs went weak, and he didn’t dare go any further. He quietly fled from the Moon Pond.

Hidden behind the bushes, the little animals burst into laughter. There were no giant monsters or dinosaurs in Moon Forest. They had made two big wooden feet together to “create” those giant footprints!
