Mike loves eating pancakes. Whenever his mom makes pancakes, he stands by and watches. He sees his mom mix flour, eggs, salt, and water into a batter, then put some oil in the frying pan. Once the oil is hot, she pours in some of the batter, spreading it evenly. Soon, one side of the pancake turns golden brown.

His mom then holds the pan handle, gives it a firm flick of her wrist, and the pancake flips in the air, landing back in the pan. After a while, the other side turns golden brown too, and a delicious pancake is ready. Mike finds making pancakes both novel and fun, so he asks his mom to let him try.

“Be careful, it’s not as easy as it looks,” his mom warns.

Mike grabs the pan handle with both hands and, imitating his mom, throws the pancake into the air. Strangely, the pancake doesn’t come back down. When he looks up, he sees the pancake stuck to the ceiling. Just then, the pancake falls down with a “plop” and lands right on his head.

“Well, look at that, you have a pancake hat now,” his mom says.

Unwilling to accept failure, Mike tries again. This time, the pancake flips in the air and lands perfectly back in the pan. He has made his first pancake.

“You did it!” his mom says happily.
