The Overbearing Big Bear

There was a fat bear who relied on his great strength to bully others.

One day, the bear saw a farmer planting carrots in a clearing by the woods. He swaggered over and said, “Listen, anything that grows above the ground belongs to me!”

When autumn came, the farmer carried a spade to dig up the carrots. He gave the bear the carrot tops and took the carrots, which were underground, and loaded them onto his wheelbarrow to take home. The bear chewed on a few carrot tops and spat them out, saying, “Pah! Not tasty at all.” He hurried after the farmer and gruffly said, “Next time, no matter what you plant, I want the stuff underground; you can keep what’s above ground.”

The following year, the farmer planted wheat. When it was time to harvest, the bear came again. The farmer gave the bear the wheat roots and loaded the wheat onto his cart to take home.

Looking at the pile of wheat roots, the bear sighed and said, “Alas, I’ve been tricked again!”
