The Mouse That Robbed the Moon
One night, a little mouse stood under a tree, holding a bamboo stick, and shouted at the moon on the treetop, “Don’t move! Hand over your treasures!”
The moon was frightened and gave out a beam of light.
The little mouse put it in his pocket, took it home, and made a moon lamp.
The next night, the little mouse saw the moon bathing in the water.
He picked up a branch and shouted loudly, “Don’t move! Hand over your treasures!”
The moon was very scared. It shook and handed over a drop of water. Inside the drop of water, there was a reflection of a small moon.
The little mouse put it in a grass-leaf box and took it home.
He placed the drop of water on a crystal music box, and when the music played, the moon in the water droplet would sway.
The little mouse thought the moon was timid and easy to bully, so on the third night, he went to find the moon again.
A white cloud floated by, and the little mouse saw half of the moon’s face. He picked up a hook with a long line, swung it hard, and the hook landed at the moon’s feet.
“Don’t move! Hand over your treasures!”
After a while, a yellow ribbon floated down from the sky.
The little mouse took it home and made a bedspread, filling his little bed with moonlight.
On the fourth night, the little mouse took action again.
“Moon, hand over your treasures quickly!” The little mouse shouted through a megaphone.
The voice was so loud! The moon was frightened. It shook twice and took out a moonlight cup, a crescent necklace, and a yellow jade plate.
“Ha ha!” The little mouse laughed with glee. He stretched out his hands, ready to catch them.
“Come up and get them yourself!” the moon suddenly said. “I’m afraid I’ll drop them!”
“Idiot, I… can’t… climb… up!” the little mouse squeezed out the words through his teeth.
“Can’t climb up? Then…” the moon blinked and repeated softly.
Suddenly, the moon was no longer so afraid. It put away all the items.
“Hey, hurry up and hand them over!” the little mouse was getting impatient.
“No, these are mine!” the moon raised its voice.
“I’ll use my hook!”
“I’ll break the hook!”
“I’ll hit you with my bamboo stick!”
“I can fly and run; you can’t hit me!”
“I, I, I…” the little mouse jumped up and down in anger.
“If you keep causing trouble, I’ll swallow you!” The moon floated down from the sky, getting closer and closer to the little mouse. The moon opened its mouth wide
“Oh my, that’s too scary!” The little mouse shivered and ran away like a streak of lightning.
After a while, the little mouse came back with a big bag
“Here, I’m returning everything!” He dumped the contents of the big bag on the ground; it was all the things the little mouse had robbed.
The little mouse put down the bag and ran away swiftly.
At that moment, the moon in the clouds turned away and secretly smiled.
