The Mischievous Moon Rabbit
Everyone knows there’s a little rabbit on the moon.
But you probably don’t know that this little rabbit is quite mischievous. One day, when the round moon turned into a crescent, the little rabbit stood on the tip of the crescent moon, dancing joyfully, jumping higher and higher.
An old star, the Star Granny beside the moon, said, “Little rabbit, be careful! Don’t step off and fall!”
“I won’t!” the little rabbit replied, jumping even more energetically. But unexpectedly, he lost his balance and stepped off the edge. He heard Star Granny exclaim, “Oh no!” and suddenly, he found himself falling through the air, the wind rushing past his ears.
The little rabbit fell and fell…
With a loud splash, he looked down and realized he had smashed a crescent moon into pieces. The little rabbit wondered, “I fell from the moon, how could I break it? If I broke the moon, where will I live now?”
He began to cry. Looking closely, he saw that he had fallen into a clear little stream, and the moon he had shattered was merely its reflection.
Fortunately, the stream wasn’t deep, and the little rabbit climbed ashore. Gazing up at the beautiful crescent moon, he cried again. Oh, how lovely the silver moon was! But he could never return.
Just then, a hedgehog peeked out from the bushes. “Who’s crying? Why are you so sad?”
“It’s me.”
“Ah, is it a lost little rabbit?”
“I’m an unfortunate little rabbit; I can’t go home!”
“Where is your home?”
“It’s in the sky, on the moon…”
“Ah.” The hedgehog was taken aback, stretching his neck to look for a while before saying, “Little rabbit, I know you! I often watch the moon’s reflection by the stream and see you dancing, tumbling, and making faces up there! Did you fall down accidentally?”
“Yes, I was too mischievous and didn’t listen to Star Granny’s advice.”
“It’s okay,” said the hedgehog. “I’ll find a way to send you back to the sky.” With that, the hedgehog disappeared into the bushes.
“Can he really come up with a solution?” The little rabbit wondered while looking at the silver moon, crying again.
After a short while, the hedgehog returned with a big elephant. He said to the little rabbit, “This is my strongest friend; he’s the champion of our forest’s softball team!”
“How strange,” thought the little rabbit. “Can a softball champion really send me to the moon?”
“He can send you to the sky,” the hedgehog seemed to read the rabbit’s mind. “Last time, the elephant used his trunk to fling a softball so hard that it disappeared; everyone searched for three days but couldn’t find it.”
“Can he really do it?” the rabbit asked anxiously.
“He can!” said the elephant, who had been silent until now. “Just hold on tightly to my trunk. When I say ‘fly,’ let go and you’ll fly!”
The little rabbit hugged the elephant’s long trunk tightly. The elephant looked up at the position of the moon and began to swing his trunk with all his might.
“One, two, three. Not enough power yet,” the elephant paused. “Let’s try again!”
“One, two, three, fly!” As soon as the little rabbit let go, he was flung up into the air.
He heard the wind whistling past his ears, and it felt like he was flying. Scared, he shut his eyes.
After flying for a long time—“thud!” The little rabbit felt something bump him, and when he opened his eyes, he was back sitting on the crescent moon. The Star Granny beside the moon looked amazed and said, “Little rabbit, how did you come back?”
“Ha ha,” laughed the little rabbit, “this is a secret.”
“You won’t be mischievous again, will you?” the Star Granny asked.
The little rabbit didn’t answer. He was busy thinking about how to make a friendly face to show the hedgehog, who was watching the moon’s reflection by the stream. He had to thank the hedgehog and the softball champion properly…
