The Little Gray Rabbit Guards the House

The little gray rabbit’s grandmother fell ill and was hospitalized, so Rabbit Dad and Rabbit Mom had to go to the hospital to take care of her. Rabbit Mom told the little gray rabbit to stay home and guard the house.

The little gray rabbit nodded and said, “Mom, don’t worry about me! I’m a big kid now, and I can take care of the house.” Hearing these words, Rabbit Mom was touched. She gave the little gray rabbit a big hug before hurrying off to the hospital.

The little gray rabbit ran to the door and carefully checked the lock, then sat down at the desk to start doing homework.

Suddenly, there was a knocking sound, “Knock, knock, knock.” The little gray rabbit ran to the door and asked, “Who is it?”

“It’s Uncle Hippo from downstairs. I’m here to play chess with your dad.”

The little gray rabbit recognized Uncle Hippo’s voice. But Mom had told the little gray rabbit that if anyone came by while he was home alone, he shouldn’t open the door. So the little gray rabbit thought quickly and replied, “Oh, Uncle Hippo! My dad will be home soon. You can wait for him downstairs and play chess when he gets back.”

“Child, are you home alone right now?” Uncle Hippo asked with concern.

“No! My mom is taking a nap in her room. Please keep your voice down so you don’t wake her. Uncle Hippo, you should go home and wait for my dad there!” The little gray rabbit pretended his mom was home napping, a clever way to protect himself.

“Oh, okay. I’ll head home now,” said Uncle Hippo as he went downstairs.

A little while later, there was another knock on the door. The little gray rabbit ran to the door and asked, “Who is it?”

“Hello, I’m Big Dog from the gas company. My employee number is 7654321. I’ve come to check if your gas is leaking.”

“Hello, Mr. Big Dog! Thank you for coming to check our gas. But my mom worked late last night and she’s very tired. She’s napping right now, and I don’t want to wake her. Could you please come back after checking the neighbors’ gas?”

“Oh, I see! Your mom is home? I thought you were home alone. Alright, I’ll come back later.”

The little gray rabbit pressed his ear to the door and listened as Big Dog’s footsteps went downstairs, breathing a sigh of relief.

But not long after, there was yet another knock, this time more urgent and louder, with an unfriendly vibe. The little gray rabbit, feeling a little scared, asked, “Who is it?”

“Little Rabbit, I’m Uncle Wolf, a good friend of your parents. I’ve come to bring you a big cake.”

The sweet smell of cake wafted through the crack in the door, making the little gray rabbit’s mouth water. He really wanted to eat that delicious cake, but he cautiously thought, “I’ve never heard my parents mention an Uncle Wolf before. I better call my parents to tell them.”

When the little gray rabbit picked up the phone to dial his parents’ number, there was no sound at all. Oh no! Uncle Wolf must have cut the phone line. How could he call for help?

The knocking grew louder and more impatient. Uncle Wolf was becoming irritated outside, saying, “Little Rabbit, open the door quickly! Hurry up!”

The little gray rabbit ran to the balcony and shouted, “Help! Help!”

But downstairs, the street was bustling, and nobody could hear the little gray rabbit’s cries for help.

In this critical moment, the little gray rabbit came up with a great idea. He tore out pages from his notebook, folded them into paper airplanes, and wrote “SOS” and his home’s address on them.

The little gray rabbit rushed to the window and tossed the paper airplanes outside. The paper airplanes fluttered through the air, and a few landed on the busy street below. At first, people were about to complain about “naughty kids littering,” but then they noticed the little gray rabbit on the balcony with his arms raised, shouting for help. They also saw the “SOS” signal and his address on the paper airplanes.

Everyone quickly grabbed sticks and other tools and ran upstairs to rescue the clever little gray rabbit, capturing Uncle Wolf and handing him over to Black Cat Detective at the police station.

Safety Reminder:
If someone knocks on the door and your parents are not home, don’t open the door casually. You should look through the peephole and ask who it is before opening. Children learn to do this by watching their parents.

Parents should remind their children not to believe any excuses a stranger might give, such as claiming to be a family friend, colleague, distant relative, utility worker, or offering gifts or food. Children should never open the door for strangers.

If the stranger refuses to leave, children should call their parents or go to the balcony and shout for help to scare the stranger away.

Teach children how to speak to strangers through the door: Never let a stranger know their parents are not home. Children can even say their parents are napping or are just downstairs to better protect themselves.
