The Little Fox’s Treasure Chest
The little fox loved taking walks. One day, while walking, it saw a shiny white pebble in the grass by the roadside. The little fox was delighted, picked up the pebble, and brought it home. It placed the pebble in a small box on the windowsill. The sunlight shone on the windowsill.
The little fox thought: “Every day, I will pick up a beautiful little thing and bring it home to put in the box, and it will become a treasure chest.”
The next day, the little fox was lucky and found a beautiful bow.
On the third day, it found a pinecone that had fallen from a tree. The little fox picked up the pinecone and carefully examined it. It was amazed:
“Oh, the pinecone looks just like a pagoda!”
On the fourth day, the little fox found a button.
On the fifth day, it found a small round mirror.
The small box on the windowsill gradually filled up, and the sunlight shining on the windowsill made the items in the box glimmer. The animals in the forest were curious and came to ask about it.
“Little fox, what’s in that treasure on your windowsill? Can we take a look?”
“That’s my treasure chest,” the little fox said proudly. “You’re all welcome to come and see.”
The animals gathered around the treasure chest and looked at it from all sides. Miss Squirrel exclaimed:
“Oh my, that’s my bow!”
The little dog said:
“That’s the button from my coat. I’ve been looking for it for ages.”
Mrs. Rabbit said:
“Oh, my little round mirror, it’s here!”
Miss Squirrel took back her bow, the little dog took his button, and Mrs. Rabbit took her round mirror. They said to the little fox:
“Little fox, your treasure chest is amazing. We found the things we lost.”
A hundred ants heard about the little fox’s treasure chest, where lost things could be found, and they hurried over as well. The hundred ants said:
“Little fox, our home was washed away by the rain yesterday. We came to your treasure chest to find our home.”
The little fox let the hundred ants climb up onto the windowsill and search in the treasure chest. Inside the treasure chest, there was only a pinecone and a pebble. There was no home for the hundred ants, and they began to cry.
“Our home, we don’t have a home anymore.”
The little fox gave the pinecone to the hundred ants and said:
“You can use this pinecone as your home. It has many rooms inside.”
The little fox placed the pinecone under a big tree, and the hundred ants happily moved into their new home. Now, the little fox’s treasure chest had only the shiny white pebble left. However, the little fox wasn’t worried at all, because it believed that the next time it went for a walk, it would surely find something good again. Before long, the treasure chest would be full again and once more glimmer in the sunlight.
