The Kind-Hearted Little Mushroom
The little mushroom was bowing its body, with its head hidden underground, having a sweet dream. Suddenly, a cool drop of water fell on it.
Little Mushroom: “How refreshing.”
The little mushroom rubbed its eyes, stretched lazily, and slowly poked its head out. Another raindrop fell on it, and it lifted its little face, taking a deep breath of the moist air. Just then, a little ant hurriedly crawled past the little mushroom.
“Little ant, come in and take shelter from the rain,” the little mushroom greeted.
Little Ant: “Sure, sure.”
The little ant agreed, wiped the rain off its face, and saw that it was the little mushroom talking to it.
“Thank you, little mushroom,” the little ant said, scrambling under the little mushroom and shaking off the raindrops.
“You’re welcome,” the little mushroom replied.
Being able to do something for its friends made it feel very happy.
The little mushroom shook its head, looked around, and suddenly saw a little butterfly struggling to drag its wet wings, swaying in the rain. The little mushroom quickly called out, “Little butterfly, come take shelter from the rain.”
Little Butterfly: “Thank you, little mushroom.”
The little butterfly said, shivering, as it crawled under the little mushroom. To keep the little ant and little butterfly from getting wet, the little mushroom tried to stretch its body. At this moment, there was a series of “ouch, ouch” cries from above, and with a thud, a beetle fell from mid-air, startling the little mushroom.
The beetle’s bottom nearly hit the little mushroom’s head, missing it by a hair. Fortunately, the little mushroom had shrunk its body in time, or its head would have had a hole.
The beetle, seeing the bad weather, hurriedly tried to fly home, but a big raindrop hit it squarely, causing it to panic and forget how to fly, falling from the sky and landing beside the little mushroom. The little mushroom invited the beetle, “Beetle, come in and take shelter from the rain.”
“Thank you, thank you,” the little beetle said, quickly crawling under the little mushroom. The little mushroom stood on tiptoe and stretched its body even more. The little ant, little butterfly, and little beetle all needed its protection, so it had to become stronger.
Thinking this, the little mushroom’s feet gripped the soil tightly, and its roots extended in all directions, rapidly absorbing nutrients.
The rain poured down harder and harder. Soon, two little birds took shelter, a little rabbit took shelter, a little monkey took shelter, a little squirrel lost in the rain took shelter, and a little cat pulling a little pig’s tail also took shelter.
The rain poured down harder and harder. To let its friends take shelter, the little mushroom kept stretching itself bigger and bigger. Underneath the little mushroom, the little birds sang, the little butterflies danced, the little ants played music, and the little monkeys and little squirrels performed acrobatics.
The sound of the rain outside seemed to turn into applause. The little animals laughed and jumped, having a great time. Their laughter even attracted a groundhog to join in the fun.
The rain stopped, and a beautiful rainbow hung in the sky. The sun showed its smiling face. Goats, deer, little foxes, and many other animals came under the little mushroom.
By now, the little mushroom had grown into a big mushroom, the largest mushroom in the world. It looked like a big umbrella, standing under the warm sunlight, providing a happy home for the little animals. The sun couldn’t burn them, and the rain couldn’t wet them. The little animals played happily under the big mushroom.
One day, Mr. Giraffe, a reporter for the Little Animal Newspaper, came over with his camera. He was amazed by the big mushroom in front of him. He quickly pressed the shutter, taking pictures of the big mushroom and, of course, the little animals playing under it.
The big mushroom’s photo was featured on the front page of the Little Animal Newspaper. Now, the big mushroom had become the most charming and attractive mushroom star!
