Bouncy is a kangaroo. She is a bit different from other kangaroos.
Kangaroo pouches are usually on their bellies, but have you ever seen a kangaroo with a pouch on her back? Our Bouncy is just like that.
When Bouncy hops around, her pouch bounces behind her head.
The other kangaroos laugh at Bouncy, saying, “Hee hee, we’ve never seen a kangaroo like this!”
Bouncy feels quite embarrassed.
Time passed quickly, and Bouncy got married. Not long after, she became a kangaroo mother. Bouncy’s baby is called Hoppy.
Other baby kangaroos grow up in their mother’s belly pouches, but Hoppy grew up in his mother’s back pouch.
While other kangaroo mothers chatted and laughed face-to-face with their babies, Bouncy had to strain to turn her head to see Hoppy on her back — because her pouch was on her back.
One day, a few mischievous baby kangaroos decided to play a prank on Bouncy.
Bouncy was sitting on a big rock by the roadside, resting with Hoppy on her back. The little kangaroos sneaked over, took the sleeping Hoppy out of Bouncy’s back pouch, handed him to their friends, and one of them, Nao Nao, climbed into the pouch.
Bouncy didn’t notice a thing. After a while, feeling rested, Bouncy said, “Hoppy, it’s time to go.”
Nao Nao stifled his laughter and stayed silent.
Bouncy started hopping. Wow, it was Nao Nao’s first time being carried while running. What a thrill! The back pouch was much more exciting than the belly pouch!
As Bouncy ran, she kept talking to Nao Nao, thinking he was Hoppy:
“Hoppy, you’re getting heavier. Mommy is so happy. Get even heavier; Mommy can carry you.”
“Hoppy, you must sit tight. Mommy is afraid you’ll fall out.”
“Hoppy, can you see far from Mommy’s back? Are you scared?”
Listening to Bouncy, Nao Nao’s face gradually turned red. He thought, although Bouncy’s pouch was on her back, what difference did it make? She was still an excellent mother who deeply loved her child, wasn’t she?
The next time Bouncy rested, Nao Nao quietly slipped out of her pouch, just as silently as he had climbed in.
Nao Nao hurried his friends to return Hoppy, and then he shared his experience of sitting in Bouncy’s pouch with his friends, making them all bow their heads in shame.
After the incident spread, no one ever laughed at Bouncy, the kangaroo with the pouch on her back, again. Whenever Bouncy passed by with Hoppy on her back, all the other kangaroos would look at them with respect.
They watched Bouncy carefully hop while talking to Hoppy, and saw Hoppy occasionally reach out his hand to massage Bouncy’s shoulders. This was something only a child who grew up on his mother’s back would know to do from a young age.
