The Helpful Little Elephant
The little elephant was a warm-hearted helper. He helped the little black pig take a bath, watered flowers for Grandma Badger, helped the puppy climb trees, and picked fruit for the hedgehog. Whenever he heard someone shout, “Little Elephant, can you help me?” he would eagerly swing his trunk and rush over.
One morning, the little elephant was bathing by the river when the red fox called from the shore, “Little Elephant, can you help me?”
“What do you need help with?” The little elephant stopped bathing and hurried up to the shore.
“Just a little favor. Yesterday, I left some bird eggs in a nest, and I need your help to get them. Heh heh, you’re the tallest in the forest.” said the red fox.
“No problem! How many eggs do you need? Three? There are just three here.” the little elephant asked.
“Yes, yes, just three! Thanks a lot, Little Elephant!” said the red fox.
In the afternoon, the red fox came back to the riverbank and called out to the little elephant who was bathing again, “Little Elephant, can you help me?”
“What do you need help with?” Once again, the little elephant hurried ashore.
“Just a little favor. Uncle Goat got injured, could you take him to my house? I’ll take care of him tonight.” the red fox said.
“No problem! I’ll take Uncle Goat to your house right away.”
“Thank you, Little Elephant! You’re the most kind-hearted in the whole forest.” said the red fox.
As night fell, Black Cat, the forest police chief, came knocking on the little elephant’s door.
“Chief Black Cat, do you need my help?” the little elephant asked.
“Help? You’ve already ‘helped’ plenty! Let me ask you: this morning, did you help the red fox get bird eggs?”
“Yes, and the red fox even praised me for being the tallest in the forest!” the little elephant said, feeling a bit shy.
“Let me ask you again: this afternoon, did you take the injured Uncle Goat to the red fox’s house?”
“Yes, and the red fox said I was the most warm-hearted in the forest!” The little elephant’s face flushed with excitement.
With a stern face, Chief Black Cat asked, “Do you know why the red fox keeps asking you for help?”
“Haha, the whole forest knows I love to—” The little elephant proudly raised his trunk.
“It’s good to like helping others, but you need to use your brain!” Chief Black Cat interrupted, “The red fox doesn’t lay eggs, so how could he leave bird eggs in a nest? And if Uncle Goat is injured, you should take him to the hospital, not the red fox’s house.”
“Oh no! The red fox wanted to steal the bird eggs, and Uncle Goat might be in danger.” The little elephant slapped his head in regret. “I have to go save Uncle Goat right away…”
“No need, Uncle Goat is safe now, and we’ve returned the bird eggs to the mother bird.” Before leaving, Chief Black Cat reminded him once more, “In the future, when helping others, think it through first. You can’t help bad people!”
