The Happy Woodpecker

Whether in the scorching heat of midsummer or the freezing cold of midwinter, the woodpecker catches borers in the forest every day, treating diseases of the trees. Day after day, year after year, it never seems to tire, earning the respect of all the birds, who affectionately call it the “forest doctor.”

One day, while the woodpecker was catching insects on a tree, a beautiful oriole flew by and perched nearby. The oriole asked the woodpecker, “You fly around the forest nonstop from dawn to dusk, pecking hard tree trunks with a ‘tap-tap-tap.’ Don’t you ever feel bitter or tired?”

The woodpecker, still tapping the tree trunk in search of borers, replied, “It would be a lie to say I don’t feel tired at all. But every time I see a sick tree rejuvenated and full of life again after treatment, I feel indescribable joy, and I don’t feel any bitterness or fatigue at all.”

“Then, don’t you feel bored doing such a repetitive and monotonous job every day?” the oriole asked again.

“The trees in the forest are all different, each with its own unique beauty. In the bright sunlight, the colors change with the seasons, offering different scenery in spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

There’s also the singing of hundreds of birds and the companionship of countless flowers. Working in such a vibrant environment, I never feel bored or tired. On the contrary, I always feel that life is so happy and colorful!” the woodpecker replied cheerfully.

“Oh, I understand now.” Listening to the woodpecker, the oriole nodded and said with emotion, “A person who dedicates themselves to others is always filled with joy in life.”
