The Generous Grandpa Bear

Grandpa Bear and Grandma Bear are a very happy grandpa and grandma.

Grandma Bear makes delicious buns. Sometimes, after making a whole basket of sweet buns, by the time it’s time to eat, only one sweet bun is left in the basket. Grandpa Bear has given the rest to the neighborhood kids.

“If the sweet buns are not enough, then we’ll eat sweet steamed cakes!” Grandma Bear says with a smile, pulling out a plate of steamed cakes from behind her. She knew Grandpa Bear would give away the sweet buns.

Grandma Bear also makes beautiful clothes. Grandpa Bear was going to visit relatives on the other side of the mountain. Grandma Bear said he should dress nicely for the visit. She made Grandpa Bear a new outfit with an embroidered hat, a jacket with a big collar, and pants with several pockets. She combed Grandpa Bear’s hair, put the new hat on his head, dressed him in new clothes, pants, and shoes, and sent him off looking handsome.

Grandpa Bear, in his new clothes, proudly walked through the forest. He saw some birds happily building nests with twigs. “Look at what kind of nests you’re building. Let me help,” said Grandpa Bear. But the nest he built was even worse. Scratching his head, he said, “Well, I’ll give you my embroidered hat for a nest.” He gave his hat to the birds and continued on his way. The sun shone warmly on his now hatless head.

Then Grandpa Bear saw some rabbits sweating in the vegetable garden, digging up carrots without even a straw hat for shade. “Look at how hot you are, you should build a shelter,” said Grandpa Bear. But where could he find materials for a shelter? Grandpa Bear used his jacket with the big collar to make a large shade for the rabbits. Now, Grandpa Bear had to go visit his relatives shirtless.

“It’s alright, I’m still wearing new pants, socks, and shoes. That’s enough to look decent,” thought Grandpa Bear. Then he saw some frogs in the river, picking water chestnuts. The little frogs could only carry one at a time. “You need a boat,” said Grandpa Bear. He took off his new shoes and gave them to the frogs as boats. The frogs happily put water chestnuts in the shoes and pushed them in the river, saving a lot of effort.

Grandpa Bear had no shoes now but was still wearing socks, so his feet didn’t hurt. Plus, the grass he was walking on was soft and comfortable. On the grass, some ants were busily carrying food, dropping white grains of rice all over. “Why don’t you have bags?” asked Grandpa Bear. He gave his socks to the ants for bags. The ants filled the socks with rice, preventing any grains from falling.

Now, Grandpa Bear was barefoot, walking to visit his relatives. “It’s okay, I often walk barefoot. I’m still wearing new pants, that’s good enough,” he thought. Walking along, he saw squirrels gathering pine nuts, hazelnuts, and walnuts. But there was only one tree hole, not enough for all the nuts. “My pants have many pockets, perfect for storing things,” said Grandpa Bear. He gave his pants with many pockets to the squirrels.

Grandpa Bear was now wearing just his shorts. “This isn’t suitable for visiting,” he thought. He turned and ran home, only to find Grandma Bear waiting halfway. Seeing Grandpa Bear in just shorts, Grandma Bear laughed. “I knew you’d be this generous, so I brought you clothes!” This time, Grandma Bear dressed Grandpa Bear in a large onesie, with the top, pants, and socks all in one piece!

Surprisingly, the onesie had carrots, water chestnuts, and walnuts inside. These were gifts from the rabbits, frogs, and squirrels for Grandpa Bear to bring to his relatives.

Hand in hand, the happy Grandpa Bear and Grandma Bear walked together to visit their relatives.
