The Frog’s Turtle Friend
By the river, there were two big trees: one was a willow tree, and the other was a camphor tree.
Under the willow tree lived a little frog, and under the camphor tree lived a little turtle.
The little frog and the little turtle always looked for food alone and swam in the river alone, which was really boring.
One day, the little turtle said to the little frog, “Let’s be friends!”
The little frog shook his head and said, “I will never be friends with an ugly turtle like you. Your shell is hard and black. My green outfit is much prettier than your shell. Just look at yourself; your shell is so ugly.”
The little turtle felt a bit sad hearing this, but he really wanted to be friends with the little frog.
So, he found many green leaves that could be used as dye and dyed himself green all over.
“Let’s be friends now. Look, I’m green!” The little turtle ran happily to the little frog and said.
The little frog shook his head and said, “I will never be friends with a clumsy turtle like you. You walk so slowly. I’m much more agile than you. I can jump really far. Can you?”
The little turtle wanted so much to be friends with the little frog that he began practicing jumping, but he almost broke his head in the process.
Thinking of the little frog’s words, the little turtle felt both sad and angry.
He said to himself, “The shell on my back is hard and heavy. It’s completely useless and stops me from jumping. It’s so annoying!”
The little turtle wanted to hide his shell, so he curled up into a ball and plopped into the river.
The little frog was bathing by the river. Suddenly, he shouted angrily, “Little turtle, you are a big liar!”
It turned out that the green dye on the little turtle had been washed off by the water.
The little turtle was extremely frustrated. Suddenly, he heard a voice by his ear: “Little turtle, could you please help me cross the river?”
It was a little ant.
The little turtle didn’t say anything. He just floated to the riverbank and placed a leaf on his back.
The little turtle carried the little ant to the other side of the river.
The little ant said, “Little turtle, thank you so much. Your shell is so flat and stable. It’s amazing!”
The little turtle then heard the voice of a little snail.
“Little turtle, I urgently need to get to the other side of the river. Could you please help me cross?”
The little frog, standing nearby, overheard and said defiantly, “I can cross the river by myself. I don’t need the little turtle’s help.”
At that moment, a snake suddenly crawled out of the grass. The little turtle saw it and quickly rushed over to hide the little frog under his shell.
“Thank you for saving me, little turtle. Your shell is truly amazing! I want to be friends with you!” the little frog said gratefully.
As good friends, the little frog and the little turtle went for walks together, looked for food together, and relaxed under the big trees together. They found everything to be so much more interesting.
