The Brave Little Hedgehog
Among all the little friends, the one whom Little Monkey looked down upon the most was Little Hedgehog. Just look at his ugly appearance: his whole body covered with big needles, a small pointed head that was always tucked under his belly, giving the impression of being timid and afraid of everything.
One day, the little friends were playing hide and seek, and Little Hedgehog wanted to join in. Little Monkey was not happy. “Go away, why are you trying to join in the fun?”
Little Hedgehog blinked his eyes, looking very pitiful.
Little Deer and Little Squirrel pleaded for Little Hedgehog, “Let Little Hedgehog join, Little Monkey!”
“Hmph, let him join? What can he do? He’s so dumb,” Little Monkey grumbled.
This was really unfair! Little Rabbit jumped out to speak up for Little Hedgehog, “Little Hedgehog is not dumb; every night he catches a few mice.”
“So what if he catches mice?” Little Monkey raised his voice. “Can he run as fast as I can? Can he climb this tree like I can?”
No one said anything. Little Hedgehog moved his round body a bit and quietly retreated to the side.
The game of hide and seek started. Little Rabbit dashed into the grass, his white body hidden by the long grass. Suddenly, Little Rabbit screamed in fear, “Snake! Snake!”
All the little friends ran out from their hiding places and asked where the snake was. Before Little Rabbit could answer, the snake had already slithered in front of them, its body thick and long, with a triangular head and venomous tongue flicking out, making a terrifying hissing sound.
Little Monkey shouted, “Run!” and was the first to turn and flee. Little Rabbit, Little Squirrel, and Little Deer followed behind. The snake straightened its body and chased after them with all its might.
As they passed Little Hedgehog, he suddenly bit the snake’s tail and tucked his head under his belly. The snake raised its head high and shook it fiercely, trying to bite Little Hedgehog. Little Hedgehog was not afraid at all; he kept a firm grip on the snake’s tail. The snake coiled up, trying to strangle Little Hedgehog. Little Hedgehog mustered all his strength, arched his back, and all his sharp spines stood up. The snake’s body was pierced with countless small holes. After a few struggles, it finally lay motionless.
The little friends came back and saw that Little Hedgehog had killed the fierce venomous snake. They all started praising him:
“Thanks for saving us!”
“Little Hedgehog can not only catch mice but also fight venomous snakes. That’s amazing!”
Little Monkey blushed and hung his head, saying, “Little Hedgehog, you’re brave. I used to look down on you. Please forgive me.”
