The Bear Who Wanted to Become a Bird
Once upon a time, there was a little black bear who dreamed of becoming a bird. He had dreamt about becoming a bird ten times and eventually thought he was already a little bird.
One afternoon, the little bear saw some birds resting on a branch and said to them, “Hello! I am also a bird.”
The birds laughed at him and said, “Haha, where did this big fat bird come from? Even your mouth is so flat, our bird beaks are all sharp!”
The little bear touched his nose and walked dejectedly towards the forest. But he hadn’t walked far when he tripped over a branch. The little bear got up, patted the dirt off himself, and saw that it was a sharp branch. The little bear had a clever idea and happily picked up the branch, tied it to his nose with some grass, and ran back to the tree.
The little bear looked up proudly at the birds in the tree and said, “Look, I have a sharp beak now. I am also a bird!” The birds were amused by the little bear’s “wooden beak” and laughed so hard their bellies hurt. They said, “You are still not a bird. Birds have feathers!” The little bear had no choice but to sigh and walk away again.
As he passed by a chicken farm, he saw the rooster’s beautiful feathers and had another good idea. The little bear picked up many golden feathers and stuck them on himself. Then he swaggered back to the tree and said to the birds, “Look, I have feathers now. I am also a bird!”
The birds laughed again and said, “We birds not only have sharp beaks and feathers, but we also sing and fly! Can you do that?” They burst into laughter again.
The little bear ran to the music teacher’s house but couldn’t learn to sing no matter how hard he tried. He spread his arms and jumped off a rock, hoping to fly, but ended up falling face-first into the dirt. The little bear was discouraged. He went back to the bear playground, where everyone was very friendly to him.
The little bear was delighted and thought to himself: now I don’t want to be a bird anymore.
