The Battle of Wits with the Lion Tyrant
Spring had arrived, and the forest was filled with the sounds of birds and the fragrance of flowers. However, the animals living in the forest couldn’t find any joy.
Why was that? It turned out that a lion had come to the forest. Every day, he guarded the main path leading in and out of the forest, catching and eating any animal he came across. The poor animals were so terrified that they didn’t dare leave their homes. As a result, they all called him the “Lion Tyrant.”
The animals decided they had to get rid of this dreadful “Lion Tyrant”! One day, the clever animals came up with a brilliant idea.
Early the next morning, the most clever and brave little rabbit in the forest hopped down the path with a basket of flowers. The “Lion Tyrant” saw him, grabbed him, and was about to eat him. The little rabbit pretended to be very scared and said, “P-Please don’t eat me! If you let me go, I’ll tell you where the other animals are hiding.”
Hearing this, the “Lion Tyrant” suddenly realized that it had been several days since he’d seen any other animals.
“Quick, tell me! Where are they?” the “Lion Tyrant” roared.
“Well, you have to put me down first,” the little rabbit said.
“Fine!” the “Lion Tyrant” agreed. After all, he thought, this tiny creature couldn’t possibly escape from his grasp.
“I’ll take you to them!” the little rabbit said. “But you can’t go like this. If they recognize you, they’ll all run away.” As he spoke, the little rabbit placed the flower basket over the “Lion Tyrant’s” head.
“You’re really thoughtful, but now I can’t see the path,” the “Lion Tyrant” replied.
“I’ll lead the way,” said the little rabbit, handing the lion a long bamboo pole. The “Lion Tyrant” held one end, while the little rabbit held the other, leading him to a large tree.
From up in the tree, a little monkey called down, “Little Rabbit, who’s that with you?”
“Ha! Today I’m going to have monkey meat!” the “Lion Tyrant” immediately threw off the flower basket, grabbed the bamboo pole, and started jabbing at the tree.
Suddenly, with a loud snap, a wasp nest fell to the ground, and a swarm of wasps emerged, furiously stinging the “Lion Tyrant.” In pain, the lion rolled around on the ground and accidentally fell into the river, where he drowned.
As for the little rabbit and the little monkey, they had long since run away.
Without the “Lion Tyrant,” peace returned to the forest.
