The Apple Cow That Wouldn’t Eat Apples
Once upon a time, a merchant arrived in the Land of Apples. In this land, only apples grew; no other plants could be found. From morning to night, everyone—both people and animals—ate apples: red apples for breakfast, green apples for lunch, and yellow apples for dinner.
The milk in the Land of Apples was particularly delicious because the cows were raised on apples from a young age, filling their milk with a rich apple aroma that tasted wonderful. The merchant thought to himself, “If I bring back a cow from the Land of Apples, I can sell its milk for a great price.”
He spent a lot of money to buy a cow, but on the first day back home, trouble arose. The apple cow had never seen grass before. When the merchant wasn’t looking, it took a bite and found it incredibly tasty, so it secretly devoured a bellyful of grass.
When the merchant came to milk the cow that evening, he noticed something was off about the milk’s taste. He repeatedly questioned the cow, and eventually, it confessed that it had eaten grass. This infuriated the merchant, who shouted, “I spent a fortune on you to bring back apple-flavored milk! Now it tastes like grass! Who am I supposed to sell this to?!”
The cow pouted and replied, “I don’t care about your money; after eating apples for so many years, I’m sick of them! Even if you hold my head down, I won’t eat apples!”
The merchant tried every tactic he could think of to persuade the cow to eat apples, but it stubbornly kept its mouth shut. He realized that if this continued, the cow might starve, which would be an even greater loss for him.
Then the merchant came up with a clever plan. He began to feed the cow heaps of grass every day. The cow was delighted and ate enthusiastically. Finally, one day, the merchant declared, “That should be enough!”
He took the cow and a full cart of hay back to the Land of Apples. This caused quite a stir, as there was now a cow that ate grass, and its milk had a delicious grassy flavor! People flocked to buy the milk, eager to try this new taste.
In the end, the clever merchant made a lot of money.
