Teaching kids about happiness

On the hillside, there was an unhappy little tree growing among many happy little trees. When the breeze gently blew, the happy little trees would shake their leaves and cheerfully say, “So comfortable, so comfortable.” When it rained, the happy little trees would spread their branches and cheerfully say, “So refreshing, so refreshing.” When children came to play in the forest, the happy little trees would shake their heads and cheerfully say, “Welcome, welcome, welcome children.”

Only the unhappy little tree frowned every day, feeling miserable. When the wind blew, it frowned and said, “Don’t touch me, I hate it.” When it rained, it scowled and said, “It’s raining again, so annoying.” When children came to play, it grumbled, “So noisy, go away!” It was unhappy every day and could never feel joyful.

The unhappy little tree frowned and scowled so much that no one wanted to go near it. Earthworms would bypass the unhappy little tree to loosen the soil for the happy little trees; birds would fly over the unhappy little tree to build nests and sing in the happy little trees.

Day by day, the happy little trees grew taller, with dense green leaves and thick branches. The unhappy little tree, however, remained stunted, with small, yellow leaves and thin, skinny branches.

“Why doesn’t anyone like me?” the unhappy little tree worried.

One winter evening, snowflakes began to fall from the sky. The happy little trees cupped the snowflakes, letting them land on their leaves and branches. In the moonlight, the happy little trees were beautifully adorned with snow.

The unhappy little tree also wanted to become beautiful. It stretched out its branches and spread its leaves, trying to catch the snowflakes. Lo and behold, the unhappy little tree stopped frowning and scowling. Snowflakes, like butterflies, fluttered over to decorate the unhappy little tree, settling on its branches and at its base.

When morning came, the children came out to play and saw the most beautiful silver tree covered in snow butterflies. Everyone gathered there to have snowball fights and build snowmen. With so many children playing happily around it, the unhappy little tree felt very happy.

The unhappy little tree no longer frowned or scowled. It began to grow, its leaves turned green, and its branches thickened. Birds came to build nests, and earthworms came to loosen the soil; everyone liked it.

There were no more frowning, scowling unhappy little trees on the hillside—only happy little trees remained.
