Teaching children about responsibility
Haha Monkey and Hum Hum Pig had both moved to new homes. Their yards were adjacent, separated by only a green fence.
One morning, Haha Monkey took a broom and started sweeping his yard. When he reached the edge of the green fence, he found it very hard to clean there. He thought, “This green fence isn’t mine anyway, so I can’t be bothered to sweep it.”
After Haha Monkey went back inside, Hum Hum Pig came out to sweep his yard. He also found it hard to clean near the green fence and thought, “This green fence isn’t mine, and if Haha Monkey isn’t going to sweep it, neither will I.”
As a result, since both Haha Monkey and Hum Hum Pig were unwilling to clean, sometimes they even swept their trash to the edge of the green fence. The trash piled up more and more, emitting a terrible smell.
One day, a sudden gust of wind blew all the trash by the green fence into both of their yards.
Seeing the trash all over the yards, Haha Monkey seemed to realize something. He quickly grabbed his broom and started sweeping not only the trash in the yard but also the trash by the green fence. Seeing this, Hum Hum Pig felt embarrassed and hurriedly took his broom to help.
With the joint effort of Haha Monkey and Hum Hum Pig, both yards were cleaned up completely. And there was no trash to be seen by the green fence anymore.
Though simple, this story is helpful in inspiring a sense of public responsibility in young children.
