Stop, Rabbit!

Little Grey Rabbit was hopping along with a basket of carrots. Today was Granny Rabbit’s birthday, and she was bringing the fresh carrots to Granny.

“Stop, rabbit!” came a gruff voice from behind.

“Who’s calling me? Is it a bear? Will he come charging at me with his fists?” Little Grey Rabbit was terrified. She picked up her basket and ran quickly.

She leaped over bushes and ran under the low trees.

“A tall animal like a bear would have to lower its head and bend down to slowly get through this small forest,” thought Little Grey Rabbit with a hint of pride on her face.

“Stop, rabbit!” came a sharp voice from behind.

“Who’s calling me? Is it a fox? Will he pounce on me with his sharp teeth?” Little Grey Rabbit was even more frightened. She picked up her basket and ran even faster.

She dived into the grass, pressed herself close to the ground, and crawled forward. “The long blades of grass cover my body. When I move inside, the fox will think it’s just the wind gently blowing the grass.” Little Grey Rabbit smiled with a touch of pride on her face.

“Stop, rabbit!” came a thin voice from behind.

“Who could it be? Could it be a venomous snake? Will he attack me with his long tongue?” Little Grey Rabbit was terrified. She stretched out her four legs and sprinted across the meadow like the wind, running all the way to Granny Rabbit’s house. She quickly closed the door and threw herself into Granny Rabbit’s arms.

Granny Rabbit held Little Grey Rabbit tightly, stroked her long ears, and kissed her little face. Little Grey Rabbit’s racing heart slowly began to calm down.

“Thump, thump, thump!” came a knock at the door, followed by three voices: one gruff, one sharp, and one thin. “Rabbit, open the door!”

Little Grey Rabbit’s heart started to race again. She jumped onto the bed and burrowed under the covers.

Granny Rabbit looked out the window and saw a raccoon, a little chicken, and a little mole standing at the door.

Granny Rabbit opened the door, and the raccoon, little chicken, and little mole walked into the room. They placed the carrots on the table.

The raccoon, little chicken, and little mole saw Little Grey Rabbit’s state and laughed, “Ha ha ha! Rabbit, rabbit, you’re such a scaredy-cat, like a little turtle hiding in its shell!”

Hearing this, Little Grey Rabbit angrily poked her head out, her face turning bright red. “Who says I’m a scaredy-cat? I’m not a little turtle hiding in its shell!”

“Then why did you run even faster when we called ‘Stop, rabbit’?” The raccoon, little chicken, and little mole laughed together. “We just wanted to tell you: ‘Stop, rabbit, you dropped your carrots.'”

Little Grey Rabbit’s face turned even redder. She lowered her head and thought to herself: Next time, I must be braver!
