Squirrel Story: The 55th Cherry Blossom Tree

On the 55th cherry blossom tree lived Little Five the squirrel and his family.

Since Little Five was very young, his father had always been busy. Before dawn, his father would set off for work far away. In the evening, his father would bring Little Five delicious treats—sometimes a few fragrant pinecones, sometimes some round, plump berries, and sometimes a few pieces of sweet cherry blossom cakes.

Little Five’s father loved him very much, and Little Five loved his father too. But his father didn’t like to talk, and neither did Little Five. Little Five decided to tell his father how he felt, so he ran to the distant South Wind Post Office and sent out the message: “Dad, I love you.”

Under the 55th cherry blossom tree lived Old Five the mole, who sold cherry blossom cakes.

From a long time ago, Old Five’s son had gone to work far away. He only came back a few times a year, sometimes in winter, sometimes in summer.

On the morning of the fifth day of the fifth month, Old Five was kneading cherry blossom cakes when the South Wind mailman suddenly delivered a letter. The address on the envelope was the 55th cherry blossom tree.

“It must be a letter from my son.”

Old Five trembled as he opened the letter. A warm and firm message came out: “Dad, I love you.”

“Son, I love you too,” Old Five choked out as he continued kneading the cherry blossom cakes.

The fifth day of the fifth month was Little Five the squirrel’s birthday. His father would stay at home for the entire day, but Little Five restlessly watched out the window.

After waiting a long time and not seeing any sign of the South Wind mailman, Little Five walked over to his father, who was eating cherry blossom cakes.

“Dad, I love you.”

“Son, I love you.”

Father and Little Five spoke the words at the same time. After speaking, Father awkwardly lowered his head and took a big bite of the cherry blossom cake, saying, “This cherry blossom cake tastes a bit strange…”

Little Five excitedly shook his head; it was the best cherry blossom cake he had ever eaten.
