Squirrel Storing Food

The students were particularly happy today because the teacher was taking them to the forest park to see the squirrels. Before leaving, the teacher specially brought a small cloth bag.

The forest park was beautiful, with green trees and red flowers. The students walked and watched cheerfully. The teacher led the way in front and reminded them, “Squirrels are friends of humans. The squirrels here are not afraid of people and will even take pictures with them. But remember, don’t try to catch the squirrels with your hands, don’t scare them, and don’t feed them recklessly.”

“Got it!” the students replied in unison.

When they reached the area where squirrels often appeared, the students saw groups of squirrels running, jumping, and even circling around tourists, stretching out their little hands to take food from the tourists’ hands.

“Teacher, we also want to feed the squirrels,” the students said eagerly.

The teacher smiled, opened the small cloth bag, and grabbed a handful of peanuts. “Let me feed them! You observe how the squirrels eat the peanuts!”

As soon as the teacher stretched out her hand, a large squirrel ran over and grabbed the peanuts from her hand. It picked up one peanut, put it in its mouth, then grabbed another and repeated the process until it had taken all the peanuts. The large squirrel then ran behind a big tree and surprisingly dug a hole to bury the peanuts.

The teacher fed one squirrel after another, and they all did the same thing.

“Did you see that clearly, kids?” the teacher asked.

“Yes, we saw that the squirrels didn’t eat the peanuts directly but buried them in the ground,” the students answered.

The teacher then asked, “Why do you think the squirrels bury the peanuts in the ground?”

“Maybe they’re saving them for when they’re hungry.”

The teacher smiled and said, “That’s right! This is a habit of squirrels. They store enough food in the autumn to last through the winter!”

“Then we should learn from the squirrels,” the students said, “learning to store food like they do.”

The teacher praised them, “You are very smart! By not wasting and storing up supplies regularly, you’ll have enough when you’re hungry and won’t worry!”
