Short Love Story : Distance
They were destined to be together, it seemed, having been college classmates and then working at the same place after graduation.
She was the type of passionate, romantic, and strikingly beautiful girl, while he was just an honest and sincere ordinary man. She enjoyed spending weekends with him, chatting at bars, and when she was in a bad mood, she would cry on his shoulder until the world seemed to fade away.
During long holidays, they would turn off their phones and go traveling, singing in the mountains. But that was all there was to it. Deep down, he always felt that a girl like her would never be his.
One day, several college friends came to their city for a visit and invited them to get together. All their friends were married, leaving just the two of them still single. When asked when they would celebrate their wedding, she smiled at him, her eyes sparkling. He smiled faintly and turned to call the waiter, “Add another sweet and sour fish flower, extra sugar and less vinegar, with cilantro.”
Sweet and sour fish flower was her favorite dish; she was from the south and loved sweet flavors. She also had a peculiar habit of adding cilantro to any dish. Listening to him order so fluently, her heart skipped a beat.
That night, as he walked her home, he said goodnight as usual and turned to leave. She called out to him. He turned back, and in the bright light, he saw her press one hand against her chin, point at him with the other, then put a finger to her lips and turn it a few times. She opened one hand, gently stroked the back of the thumb with the other hand, and then pointed her index finger at herself. He watched her make a series of strange gestures, confused and wanting to ask her, but she had already turned and run upstairs. “Such a little girl!” he sighed, shaking his head with a smile.
Shortly after, he was sent to manage a branch company in another city. He thrived there, performing exceptionally well. At first, they kept in touch, but gradually, they lost contact. Later, he found a girlfriend, got married, and had children.
One evening after dinner, he casually picked up a magazine his wife had bought and noticed a section called “Love Sign Language.” Curious, he opened it. The illustrations showed a series of gestures identical to the ones she had made back then. Next to them was a note explaining the sign language: “Waiting for you to say you love me!”
True love knows no distance in the heart…
