Shoes Story: The Singing Shoes
Ever since a hungry wolf came to the meadow, the rabbits had been hiding in their homes, too scared to come out. Little Rabbit Gibb was no exception.
Unable to visit friends, chat, race on the grass, play hide-and-seek, or lie on the soft grass at night counting the stars, Gibb was feeling very stifled.
To pass the time, Gibb decided to wash everything in the house that could be washed.
One day, Gibb found a pair of winter shoes, washed them, and left them to dry on the roof before heading inside to sleep. Soon, he fell into a sweet dream.
Outside, a gust of wind began to blow. The wind caught one of the shoes drying on the roof and blew it away.
The wind rolled the shoe across the grass until it finally stopped at the edge of a small puddle.
A cricket came to the puddle to drink water, noticed Gibb’s upside-down shoe, and curiously crawled inside. It exclaimed joyfully, “What a spacious house! Now I don’t have to worry about where to live.”
Its previous home had been destroyed by a gecko that wanted to eat it.
After drinking its fill, the cricket happily hopped around in the shoe, singing to its heart’s content. To celebrate having a new home, it invited many friends over for a grand concert that night.
The sponge material in the shoe absorbed all the songs the crickets sang.
A few days later, the cricket was invited to visit a distant friend.
Not long after the cricket left, a little frog came to the puddle to practice swimming. After a few laps, it got tired. The sun was hot, and it couldn’t find a shady spot to rest, so it crawled into the shoe.
The little frog slept soundly and dreamed sweet dreams, even letting out happy “croak croak croak” sounds in its sleep.
The sponge in the shoe absorbed its laughter.
When the little frog woke up, it was already evening. “This place is great! I can swim and have a house to rest in when I’m tired. I’ll bring a few friends here,” it said. “Wait, not tomorrow, since I’m going to my grandma’s house with my mom.”
Not long after the little frog left, an injured lark landed nearby. It was looking for a place to heal, and when it saw Gibb’s shoe, it crawled in.
As the lark healed, it sang beautiful songs.
The sponge in the shoe absorbed its songs.
After the lark recovered and flew away, a slender-waisted wasp, exhausted from a long journey, flew in. It rested in the shoe for a night, and as a thank you, it sang a song before leaving.
The sponge in the shoe absorbed its song as well.
…
One day, another gust of wind blew, this time towards Gibb’s house.
Whoosh! The wind lifted Gibb’s shoe into the air and carried it back.
It flew and flew until it reached the roof of Gibb’s house, where the wind finally lost its strength. With a “thud,” the shoe landed on the roof.
Gibb had been feeling down about the missing shoe when he suddenly heard a sound on the roof. Climbing up to check, he found that the lost shoe had returned.
That night, Gibb lay in bed feeling bored when suddenly he heard the cricket’s “chirp-chirp” coming from the shoe, followed by the frog’s “croak croak,” the lark’s beautiful singing, and the wasp’s buzzing “buzz-buzz”…
The sounds blended together, like a grand concert with countless singers performing. It was lively and beautiful.
With the company of the singing shoe, Gibb no longer felt bored until the wolf finally left.
