Shattered Moon

At the foot of a great mountain, there was a beautiful river bay.

This early morning, a carp excitedly said to the frog squatting on a lotus leaf, “Do you know? Last night, I shattered the moon in the water!”

The frog, after hearing this, laughed heartily and said, “Buddy, are you telling a fairy tale?”

The carp earnestly explained, “How is this a fairy tale? Last night, I indeed shattered the moon in the water!”

“Buddy, to tell you the truth,” the frog said leisurely, “the moon in the water was already shattered by me the day before yesterday. How could you shatter it last night? If you’re not telling a fairy tale, then what are you saying?”

“You shattered the moon in the water the day before yesterday? Then why was there still a moon in the water for me to shatter last night? I think you’re lying!” the carp said with a sneer.

Both the carp and the frog believed that they had shattered the moon in the water. They argued vehemently, their faces flushed with anger.

A flower dog, who came to the riverbank to drink water, heard the argument between the carp and the frog and suddenly barked twice. The sound hit the rocky wall on the opposite bank of the river and echoed back.

The flower dog said to the carp and the frog, “Tell me, was there another dog barking just now?”

The carp and the frog hurriedly replied, “That was your echo! You can’t fool us with that!”

The frog then called “ribbit ribbit” twice, and soon, the echo came back from the other side of the river.

The flower dog said again, “Don’t you think the moon in the water is very similar to an echo? The sound from the opposite bank is just our echo, and the moon in the water is just the reflection of the moon in the sky. As long as the moon in the sky is not shattered, even if you shatter the moon in the water, it will always reappear. Instead of stubbornly sticking to your own views, why not watch the moon in the sky and the moon in the water tonight?”

Night fell. The round moon shone on the calm river. The frog arrived first. He quietly squatted on the lotus leaf, looked up at the sky, then looked down at the water, and with a kick of his legs, jumped into the water, shattering a moon.

Before long, the carp gently poked his head out. He looked at the sky, then at the water, and with a flip, dove to the bottom, shattering another moon.
