Romantic love story short: The Rose Hidden in the Rainbow Cake

If she could meet a man so devoted to her, she would cherish him and marry him.

He was a rural electrician, a rather unremarkable one at that, whose daily tasks included collecting electricity fees and repairing power lines for households.

The girl had just opened a small bakery on the roadside. Business was slow at first, and he was the only one frequenting the shop. Neither of them knew each other. She had called the power company, 95598, which brought him to her. Due to the high electricity consumption of her baking equipment, he thoroughly checked everything to ensure safety.

On the first day of opening, with no customers, the girl looked worried and wasn’t very welcoming to him. Out of the blue, he asked her to make a birthday cake, saying it was his girlfriend’s birthday and he wanted the girl to deliver it. Her face lit up with a smile because this was her first business transaction. She skillfully made a beautiful cake, knowing what young women liked these days.

After wiping the sweat from her brow, she looked at the honest electrician with eyes as clear as water and said, “You are my first customer. Can I make a small request as a gift?” He asked if she could make a rainbow on the cake.

As an electrician, he wanted to present a rainbow to his girlfriend.

The girl smiled knowingly, agreeing to make a seven-colored rainbow, confident that his girlfriend would love it. His face turned red with shyness as he thanked her, making the girl chuckle secretly.

When the girl delivered the cake to the specified address, she met a girl named Yulian. Yulian accepted the cake with a simple “thank you” and set it aside before continuing with her tasks. The girl reminded her that the rainbow on the cake was a special request from him for her. Annoyed, Yulian snapped, “Can’t you see I’m busy?” Feeling awkward, the girl left with a heavy heart.

Back at the shop, she couldn’t bear to crush his spirits when she saw his eager expression. So she lied, saying that his girlfriend was thrilled to receive the cake and thanked him. His face lit up with happiness. He told the girl that his girlfriend loved cakes and that he wanted to make every month her birthday.

From then on, he came every month on that day, each time asking the girl to make a small cake with a rainbow, which she would deliver to Yulian. However, Yulian’s reaction was always indifferent, sometimes even impatient. The girl suspected Yulian didn’t like him but couldn’t bring herself to tell him the truth when she saw his hopeful eyes. She didn’t want to hurt him. She often resolved to tell him the truth, to stop him from wasting time and money on Yulian, but the words never came out. She thought maybe, over time, Yulian would be moved by his persistence, and the rainbow would blossom.

And so, he came every month, and the girl made the cakes faithfully.

Suddenly, he disappeared as if off the face of the earth and hadn’t come for two months.

Today marked the one-year anniversary of the bakery’s opening. The girl remembered it was also Yulian’s birthday. But he still didn’t show up, and she worried they might have broken up but didn’t know how to contact him. Cleverly, she called the power company, 95598, knowing he would come if she did. He did come, checking all the electrical wiring as usual.

The girl asked if he still wanted a rainbow cake since today was his girlfriend’s birthday. Her heart pounded with a strange excitement. He said to make one last cake, as Yulian was getting engaged today, but not to him. The girl was shocked by the unfortunate ending and even more by his calm acceptance of the breakup.

Quickly, the girl made a beautiful cake and asked if he still wanted the rainbow on it. He replied, yes, and also asked for a red rose on the rainbow. The girl felt a twinge of pain, thinking how wonderful he was, and how that girl didn’t appreciate him. She thought if she met a man so devoted to her, she would cherish and marry him. She said the last cake would be free, a gift for his loyalty.

“No,” he said firmly, “This one can’t be free.” He took the finished cake, smelled it, and said, “Smells good,” then handed it back to her, saying, “This is for you. Happy birthday.”

The girl was stunned and asked, “How did you know today is my birthday?”

He replied, “You mentioned on the opening day that you chose your birthday to open the shop. Today marks the first anniversary.”

The girl said, “You seem honest but have such keen insight. Why did you put a red rose on the cake?” He looked into her eyes and said, “I like you.”

The girl playfully responded, “I don’t understand. What does ‘like’ mean?”

He shouted, “I love you!”

The girl blushed and lowered her head. Then she looked up and asked, “Weren’t you deeply in love with Yulian? How could you fall for someone else so quickly?”

He revealed, “Actually, it’s time to tell you the truth. Yulian is my cousin-in-law.”

“What! Yulian is your cousin-in-law?”

He gazed into her eyes and said, “If not for this, how could a little electrician like me ever have met you!”

The girl realized, her face blooming like the rose on the cake.
