Romantic Bedtime Stories: A Bed of Secrets

Suddenly, his wife developed an obsession with cleanliness. She began incessantly scrubbing the bed and washing the sheets every day. At first, he didn’t think much of it, but soon he realized the severity of her condition. She wasn’t just cleaning during the day—she was washing the sheets all night too, without sleeping, until her hands were pale and her fingers raw.

He grabbed her hands in frustration and said, “Stop washing…”

His wife looked at him blankly, shook her head, and continued scrubbing the sheets over and over.

Panicked, he took leave from work and brought her to numerous hospitals, but no medication seemed to help. A friend suggested that they see a psychologist. They did, and after a private session, the psychologist told him, “Her condition is the result of a psychological trauma, an attempt to escape from reality. If you can uncover and resolve the source of her anxiety, she should recover.”

He thought back carefully to the time when his wife first became ill. They hadn’t argued or had any disagreements. Everything seemed peaceful at home and at her job. What could have triggered this?

He shook his head, “There was nothing that could have caused her stress, but I was away on a business trip for a few days when she started acting like this. Could something have happened while I was gone?”

As this thought crossed his mind, his face darkened. Could it be that his wife had been unfaithful during his trip and was now overwhelmed with guilt, leading to her condition?

Unable to bear the suspicion, he confronted her, “Did you have an affair while I was away?”

His wife trembled at the accusation, unable to speak, tears streaming down her face, making him anxious as he paced around the room.

The psychologist intervened, “How about this? I’ll hypnotize her so she can reveal what’s troubling her.”

He agreed, eager to know if anything had happened during her trip. He dreaded the thought of her having an affair, and if she had, he was certain he would demand a divorce.

The psychologist initially refused to let him observe, but he insisted. Finally, the psychologist relented but warned him to stay silent. The session began, and as the psychologist gently guided her, his wife started to speak, “I went on a business trip to attend a training course, which ended a day early. I wanted to surprise my husband.” At this point, her voice grew increasingly agitated. She continued, “I came home and saw the bedroom door slightly ajar. I quietly pushed it open and saw two naked bodies…” Her emotions were spiraling out of control, and his face grew paler with each word.

Suddenly, he remembered the faint sound of the door creaking that night while he was in bed, a sound he had dismissed at the time. He now realized it was his wife who had discovered his secret.

Tears streaming down her face, she said, “I wanted to rush in… but I didn’t want to lose him. I love him. After a fierce internal struggle, I decided to pretend it never happened. I found a hotel and stayed there for the night, returning home the next day. I thought I could forget it, but I kept feeling that the bed sheets were filthy, so filthy…”

He couldn’t bear to listen anymore and asked the psychologist to stop the hypnosis.

When she awoke, she looked at her husband with a blank expression as tears welled up in her eyes.

He couldn’t help but pull her into his arms, holding her tightly as he whispered, “I’m sorry! I’ll change. I’ll get a new bed tomorrow…”

With his care and attention, her condition gradually improved, and life returned to normal. However, he always felt a deep sense of guilt, knowing how much he owed her.
