Princess Story: The Princess’s Cat
A long time ago, in a country without cats, an interesting event occurred.
One day, an elderly foreign lady came to this country for a visit and brought a cute little cat for Princess Weiwei. The little princess loved this cat very much and would never trade it for the sun and the moon. However, one night, the cat suddenly disappeared. The little princess was heartbroken, and her cries alarmed the entire palace.
The king was very worried and immediately sent people out to put up “Lost Cat Notices” overnight. The notice read: “Princess Weiwei’s cat is lost. Whoever finds it and brings it back will be rewarded with 10,000 taels of gold. The cat’s distinguishing feature is: despite being young, it has a lot of whiskers.”
Early the next morning, the guards reported that someone had brought a cat to claim the reward. The king was overjoyed but was dumbfounded when he rushed out of the palace. It turned out that the “cat” in front of him was actually a little goat.
The first “Lost Cat Notice” did not clearly describe the cat’s characteristics, so the king ordered a second notice to be put up immediately.
This time, the notice described the cat’s characteristics as: big eyes, can climb trees, and can catch mice.
Shortly after the notice was posted, someone came with a cat to claim the reward. The king looked and realized it was another mistake! The person had brought an owl. No, the second “Lost Cat Notice” still didn’t describe the cat’s characteristics clearly.
The king ordered a third notice to be posted! The third notice was a picture with the words: “See this? This is a cat!”
Soon, someone came to claim the reward again. They brought a large iron cage with an animal that looked exactly like the one in the picture, but it was dozens of times larger and had a “king” character on its forehead. Alas, it was wrong again! This wasn’t a cat; it was the tiger king. Princess Weiwei couldn’t find her beloved cat and was sitting in front of the mirror, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
Suddenly, a strange sound came from outside the window—“Meow!” Ah, the cat had come back! At this moment, the king patted his head and muttered to himself, “Why didn’t I think of it? The ‘meow meow’ sound is the cat’s distinguishing feature!”
Children, this story illustrates that by carefully observing things and identifying their most obvious characteristics, you can distinguish them from others. The king didn’t grasp the most obvious difference between the cat and other animals, which is why these mistakes happened.
