Pomelo Tree Story: A Yard Full of Green LanternsThe Pomelo Tree

Little Bear A-Jian built a house for himself.

The house wasn’t big, but it was sturdy and beautiful, with a yard in front that was large enough.

A-Jian’s yard was rather empty, and he envied his neighbor, Hippo A-Pang, who had a tall and grand pomelo tree in his yard.

In spring, the pomelo tree was full of green leaves, with white flowers blooming among them, filling the yard with the sweet fragrance of pomelo blossoms.

In summer, the tree was covered with small, adorable pomelos. These little green fruits, like mischievous little balls, would swing in the wind like they were on a swing.

Autumn arrived, the most beautiful season in Hippo A-Pang’s yard. The pomelo tree bore large pomelos, as big as footballs. Every time this happened, Little Bear A-Jian would exclaim, “Oh, what a beautiful yard full of green lanterns!”

The yard was not only beautiful but also sweet.

When the pomelos ripened, A-Jian would always receive many from A-Pang. They were sweet and delicious pomelos.

Throughout the winter, A-Jian’s house would be filled with the wonderful fragrance of pomelos…

Now, looking at his empty yard, A-Jian became even more envious of the tall pomelo tree in Hippo A-Pang’s yard.

“If only I had a pomelo tree like that in my yard!” A-Jian said more than once.

One day, Hippo A-Pang said to Little Bear A-Jian, “You love the pomelo tree so much, why don’t you plant one in your own yard?”

“Plant one?” A-Jian replied, “Think about it, if I plant a pomelo tree, how many years will it take to grow as thick and tall as yours? By then, I might not even be around anymore.”

“You’re right,” A-Pang thought for a moment and then added, “but my grandpa thought differently back then.”

“How was his thinking different?”

“He thought, although I might not live to see the pomelo tree grow thick and tall, my children and grandchildren will enjoy a large, strong pomelo tree…”

“They will see a yard full of green lanterns!”

A-Pang and A-Jian almost said this sentence simultaneously.

The words seemed to have a magical power. The very next day, Little Bear A-Jian went out, searched many places, and picked out a sapling of a very fine pomelo variety. To be honest, the sapling was indeed small, but A-Jian still carefully planted it in his yard.

The little pomelo tree grew more and more lovely.

From then on, Little Bear A-Jian no longer envied his neighbor Hippo A-Pang’s pomelo tree. He focused more on watching his own little pomelo tree grow day by day.

Every winter, when Hippo A-Pang brought him sweet pomelos, Little Bear A-Jian would say, “Thank you, and thank your grandpa for planting such a wonderful tree. But soon, we’ll also have a tall pomelo tree in our yard. One day, your family will get to taste the sweet pomelos from our yard, of a particularly fine variety. By then, our yard will also become—”

“A beautiful yard full of green lanterns!”

The two good neighbors once again almost shouted in unison.
