Peter the Unlucky Fox
Peter is an unlucky fox who encounters misfortune every day, here or there.
One day, Peter got up, crawled out of his fox hole, and went outside to forage.
He came near a farm, intending to steal some chickens to eat.
So, he bit through the wire fence surrounding the farm and slipped in. He crept up to the chicken coop and, taking advantage of the guard dog’s distraction, slipped inside. A hen immediately noticed Peter and shouted, “A fox has sneaked in! A fox has sneaked in!”
The chickens immediately became agitated, and one hen rushed out of the coop. She found the guard dog and reported that a fox had sneaked into the coop.
In the midst of the chaos, Peter finally caught a hen. He grabbed the hen in his mouth and was about to leave the coop when he saw the guard dog charging in.
The guard dog barked loudly at Peter. Peter, unwilling to give up the chicken he had caught with so much effort, tried to dash out of the coop with the chicken still in his mouth.
Seeing that Peter was still unwilling to release the chicken, the guard dog pounced on Peter and bit into his neck. Peter yelped in pain and finally let go of the chicken. The hen immediately ran back to the flock.
However, the guard dog didn’t let go and continued biting Peter’s neck. Peter had no choice but to struggle while trying to run out.
Finally, Peter reached the coop door. He used all his strength to slam the guard dog against the doorframe. The guard dog finally let go, and Peter seized the opportunity to slip away.
The guard dog watched Peter’s retreating figure and angrily said, “Hmph! You rascal! See if you dare to come again! Next time, you won’t be so lucky!”
Peter retraced his steps, crawled through the hole he had made in the wire fence, and returned to the forest where he lived.
Peter’s stomach growled with hunger. He lay down next to a rock to rest. Suddenly, he saw a rabbit in the distance and perked up.
He stood up and trotted to the spot where he had seen the rabbit. Sure enough, he found a rabbit hole. Peter was delighted. Just then, a rabbit jumped out of the hole. Peter was overjoyed and immediately gave chase. Just as he was about to catch the rabbit, it darted back into the hole.
Peter tried to crawl into the rabbit hole, but his body was too large to fit. Peter thought, the rabbits will eventually come out to forage. If I wait by the hole, I can definitely catch them.
So Peter lay down next to the hole and began a long wait.
Finally, as it was getting dark, the rabbit family emerged from the hole. Though Peter was already seeing stars from hunger, he perked up again at the sight of the rabbits. He lay still, waiting for the rabbits to move further away from the hole before making his move.
Sure enough, the rabbits hopped away from the hole. Quick as a flash, Peter pounced and grabbed a small rabbit, then started to run.
The rabbit father and mother immediately chased after him.
Peter ran for a while but began to feel exhausted. By this time, the rabbit father and mother had caught up. The rabbit father swept Peter’s legs out from under him, causing him to fall face-first into the dirt. Then, the rabbit mother kicked Peter’s head repeatedly. Peter, in pain, finally let go of the little rabbit and fled.
Peter walked dejectedly along the path home when he suddenly heard a rattlesnake. Peter looked around and saw a rattlesnake staring at him. Peter realized that the snake had targeted him as prey. The snake was so large that Peter knew he was no match for it, so he began his escape plan.
Just then, as Peter was backing away, the rattlesnake slithered closer, advancing on Peter. Peter thought, this is bad, and turned to run. The rattlesnake quickly followed, almost catching up with Peter.
As Peter ran, he noticed a trap ahead. He had an idea to lure the snake into the trap. Peter ran towards the trap, the rattlesnake following closely. Finally, as he reached the trap, Peter leaped over it, and the rattlesnake, unable to react in time, was caught in the trap. Peter had narrowly escaped once again.
It was getting darker, and it started to rain.
Peter limped back to his den. He had caught nothing to eat all day and had been beaten up. Peter thought, could this day get any worse?
As he was thinking this, the rain grew heavier, and the moon hid behind thick clouds. Peter lay in his den, too tired to move.
Soon, the drizzle turned into a downpour, and the roof of Peter’s den collapsed, letting rainwater leak inside. At first, Peter didn’t mind because the water flow was small. But before long, more and more water leaked in, soaking Peter’s fur.
Peter thought, can this day get any worse? When it rains, it pours.
The downpour not only made Peter’s den leak but also caused water to flood inside.
Peter helplessly watched the water flow in and said, “What a bad day!”
Yes, Peter had such a bad day. Let’s pray that he will have good luck tomorrow!
