Panda Stories: Learns Carpentry

Early in the morning, joyful singing echoed from the yard of Little Panda’s house in the forest—it was Little Panda singing while working on his carpentry! Grandpa Panda came into the yard with a smile. But when he looked at Little Panda’s carpentry work, his smile quickly turned into a frown. It turned out that the wood Little Panda had sawn was all crooked. Then, when Grandpa checked the wood Little Panda had planed, it was uneven, with the middle higher than the edges, like a little curved bridge. Grandpa Panda shook his head and sighed, “Oh, this kid is just too careless with his work!”

But Little Panda didn’t care at all. He quickly ran into the house and started hammering away, ding ding dong dong. “Grandpa, grandpa, look!” Before long, Little Panda proudly placed a small stool in front of Grandpa.

“Hmmm~ it does look like a stool at least!”

Little Panda clapped his hands happily and said, “Oh! I’m a carpenter now, I’ve mastered it! I can go out and do jobs now!”

“No, no!” Grandpa pulled Little Panda back, “In our line of work, your basic skills must be solid. You can’t be careless with any task!”

As Grandpa Panda was speaking, he gave a little push to the stool Little Panda had just made, and it creaked and wobbled. But while Grandpa wasn’t paying attention, Little Panda dashed off, jumped on his motorbike, and sped away.

“Little Panda, don’t go!” Grandpa ran after him.

“Don’t worry, Grandpa!” Little Panda called back over his shoulder. He was already too eager to see who in the forest might need some carpentry work.

In the forest, Giraffe’s family was getting ready for breakfast. The giraffe brother’s name was Changchang, and his sister’s name was Yuanyuan. They were both sitting at the table, waiting for breakfast. Giraffe Mom brought out a pot of soup and placed it on the table. As soon as Changchang and Yuanyuan reached for their bowls, the table began to wobble, and the soup spilled everywhere.

Giraffe Mom scolded, “Oh dear, you two are so careless!”

They protested, “Ah, it wasn’t us!”

Giraffe Mom put the ladle down on the table, and again it wobbled, spilling more soup. Changchang and Yuanyuan covered their mouths and giggled.

“Huh? What’s going on?” Giraffe Mom crouched down and looked under the table. It turned out that one of the four legs was shorter than the others. “Oh dear, we won’t be able to eat breakfast like this. You two, go find Grandpa Panda to fix the table!”

Changchang pouted, “It’s so far away, I’m not going!”

Yuanyuan puffed out her cheeks, “Hmph, I’m not going either!”

Neither of them wanted to go, and Giraffe Mom was getting upset. Just then, Little Panda rode by on his motorbike, singing as he went, “I’m the happy little carpenter, I can do anything~”

The three giraffes stuck their heads out of the window together. “You can do anything?”

Little Panda answered, “Of course!”

“Can you fix a wobbly table?” they asked.

“I sure can!”

“What will it look like when it’s fixed?”

“It’ll be as good as new!”

Changchang scoffed, “Stop bragging and come on in!”

Little Panda came in and took a look. “This table looks fine to me.”

“Is it really fine?” Changchang gave the table a little push, and it started wobbling again.

Little Panda crouched down and looked under the table. “Oh, one of the legs is shorter! Hehe, or maybe the other three legs are too long. No problem, I’ll just saw them a bit!”

Little Panda took out his saw and started sawing, saw saw saw, trimming each leg a little. “Now it’s definitely even!”

“Is it really?” Yuanyuan bumped the table with her head, and the table tilted over towards Little Panda.

Little Panda propped it back up. “Oh, now this side is too long and that side is too short. I’ll saw a little more.” Saw saw saw—he sawed the other side, but then the table tilted the opposite way. He kept switching sides, sawing away, and before long, a pile of small wood pieces had gathered around the table legs.

Finally, Little Panda jumped onto the table, stomped on it, and said, “Hey, look! It’s not wobbly anymore!”

Giraffe Mom, Changchang, and Yuanyuan all stared at the table, which was now shorter than the stools, with wide eyes and open mouths, too shocked to say a word. Little Panda clapped his hands, and off he went again.
