Owl Stories: Sleeping Owl
The Rising Sun was shining on the big Chinese scholar tree. Little yellow orioles were joyfully singing in the tree.
Mother Oriole heard this and immediately came out, shaking her head, saying, “Children, you must not sing, you must not sing!”
“Mom, didn’t you tell us to practice our singing in the morning? Why can’t we sing?” the little orioles asked in confusion.
Mother Oriole lifted her head and pointed upwards with her beak. It turned out there was a magpie’s nest above.
The little orioles laughed and said, “Mom, Uncle Magpie left his nest a long time ago. Early this morning, I saw him fly out of his nest. When he flew away, he even greeted me!”
Mother Oriole asked, “What did Uncle Magpie say?”
“He also said we shouldn’t sing!” the little orioles said curiously, “But why can’t we sing? The morning is the best time to practice our singing. So, I started singing again.”
“Uncle Magpie is right! Look up, who is sleeping?” Mother Oriole pointed to the owl that was sound asleep.
“Aunt Owl, she’s so lazy. The sun is already up, and she’s still sleeping,” the little orioles said with a slightly mocking tone, “Let me sing loudly to wake her up!”
“No, no, no, Aunt Owl works very hard!” Mother Oriole said.
“Hardworking?”
“Yes! Aunt Owl works tirelessly catching field mice at night. She can catch a dozen mice in one night, think about how much crops that saves! She’s the guardian of the crops,” Mother Oriole explained with great admiration.
“Oh! No wonder she’s sleeping so soundly!” The little orioles immediately stopped singing, and then, under their mother’s guidance, they flew far away to another big Chinese scholar tree.
