Moral lessons in fairy tales: Mrs. Trude
Once upon a time, there was a stubborn and extremely curious little girl who never obeyed her parents, no matter what they asked her to do. What kind of outcome could there be for such a child?
One day, she asked her parents, “I keep hearing people talk about Mrs. Trude, saying that everything about her is unusual and that her house is full of strange and curious things. I’m so curious, I must go see for myself someday.” Her parents strongly opposed, saying, “Trude is a bad woman who does evil deeds. If you go there, you will no longer be our child.”
But the girl did not change her mind despite her parents’ objections. When she arrived at Mrs. Trude’s house, Trude asked her, “Why is your face so pale?”
“Oh,” she replied, trembling all over, “I was terrified by the things I saw.”
“What did you see?”
“I saw a black figure on the steps.”
“That was the coal burner.”
“Then I saw a green figure.”
“That was the hunter.”
“Then I saw a blood-red figure.”
“That was the butcher.”
“Oh, Mrs. Trude, when I looked in through the window, I didn’t see you, but the devil himself, with his fiery head! I must be right, I was scared to death!”
“Oh!” said Mrs. Trude, “It seems you truly did see the witch in her usual attire. I’ve been waiting for you for so long. You can make things a bit brighter for me.” With that, she turned the girl into a log and threw her into the fire.
The log burned brightly, and the witch approached the fire to warm herself, saying, “It will shine for a little while, but then it will go out.”
------------
Curiosity is something everyone has, but sometimes too much curiosity isn’t a good thing. The little girl in the story harmed herself because of her excessive curiosity. Parents will never wish harm upon us, so in our daily lives, we should listen to our parents more often. Blindly pursuing unrealistic things will only lead to hurting ourselves.
