Stories: Monkey See, Monkey Do

One day, an old man carried a basket of hats he had painstakingly woven to the market to sell.

He walked and walked until he reached the shade of a large tree. Feeling a bit tired, he decided to rest for a while. He took one of the hats and covered his face, sitting down under the tree and falling asleep.

At this moment, a mischievous little monkey saw the old man wearing a hat and found it amusing. So, the monkey jumped down and took a hat to wear. Seeing this, the other monkeys also followed suit. One by one, they jumped down, took a hat, and wore it just like the old man.

After a while, the old man woke up. He thought, “It’s still early, I should hurry to sell my hats!” When he looked into his basket, he exclaimed, “Hey, where are my hats?” He looked around but couldn’t find them anywhere. Suddenly, he heard chirping noises from the tree above. Looking up, he saw that all his hats were on the monkeys’ heads! He said, “Monkeys, please give me back my hats.” But the little monkeys acted as if they didn’t hear him and continued chatting and laughing.

Now the old man was really worried. Suddenly, he had a clever idea. “Don’t monkeys like to imitate?” he thought. The old man came up with a plan. He took a hat in his left hand and scratched his head with his right hand. Looking up, he saw that the monkeys indeed followed his actions, each taking a hat in their left hand and scratching their heads with their right hand.

The old man thought, “This method works well!” He then threw his hat back into the basket. As expected, the monkeys on the tree also threw their hats back into the basket, one by one, with a “plop, plop, plop” sound.

The old man was overjoyed. He picked up his basket and went to the market to sell his hats.
