Mole’s Garden

After dinner, the mole Qiqi emerged from its burrow and strolled along the forest path alone, hoping to meet someone to chat with.

Does Qiqi have no friends? Indeed, it was always so lonely, but there wasn’t much it could do about it!

Because it was afraid of sunlight, Qiqi could only live in a dark burrow and come out only after the sun had set. But by then, most of the animals had already gone home, so for a long time, Qiqi hadn’t made a single friend.

Sigh, how boring! Before long, Qiqi lost interest in its walk and cut its usual post-dinner stroll short by half an hour.

But it had to find something to do to pass the time! After returning home, Qiqi took out its digging tools and turned over a patch of soil south of its burrow, planting various flower seeds it had collected the previous autumn.

“Maybe this will add some color to my dull life!” Qiqi thought.

Countless nights followed, during which Qiqi devoted its time to tending its little garden: watering, weeding, pruning… Under Qiqi’s careful care, the flowers gradually bloomed.

Soon, butterflies came, and bees too. They enthusiastically embraced every blossom.

“The flowers must be beautiful!” Qiqi imagined their appearance in its mind. Although it couldn’t see how vibrant the flowers were and couldn’t greet the butterflies and bees, the fragrance of the flowers and the lively presence of the insects filled its heart with an unprecedented sense of fulfillment and joy.

One day, a little hedgehog passed by.

“What a beautiful garden! I want to make my home here, decorate my room with baby’s breath, and make a bed out of rose petals.”

The hedgehog dug a hole on the eastern side of the garden and settled in.

A field mouse, on its way to visit the lady mouse it adored, passed by the little garden.

“So many lovely flowers! I’ll pick some to give to the one I love!” But a flower or two couldn’t fully express its affection, so it simply invited the lady mouse over and built a new home on the western side of the garden.

The more the flowers bloomed, the more vibrant and fragrant they became. The scent traveled far, far away, reaching the entrance of a distant burrow. A little rabbit poked its head out, sniffing here and there, quickly tracing the scent back to its source.

How wonderful it smelled! It would be lovely to sleep surrounded by such fragrance. However, the little rabbit didn’t want to abandon its original burrow, so it started digging a long tunnel from its home, all the way to the southern side of the little garden. Now, its home was also next to the garden!

To fully embrace this beautiful garden, the animals kept expanding their homes, and one day, the tunnels connected, and everyone met underground!

“Hello, little hedgehog!”

“Hello, little field mouse!”

“Hello, little rabbit!”

“Hello, little mole!”

“Hello, friends, it’s so nice to meet you all!”

As everyone joyfully gathered in the underground tunnel, a wandering cricket musician passed by the little garden.

“Ah, a world full of flowers—there’s no better place than this. This is the stage of my dreams!” The cricket happily hopped onto a flower stem and began playing a delightful nocturne.

Yes, there was no better place, no better little garden than this.
