marriage Stories: Keeping Love Fresh
Before marrying Cheng Lang, Ling Li had her eyes set on that ultra-large capacity refrigerator.
Shortly after their wedding, Ling Li gave up their original plan to honeymoon in the Maldives. Instead, she and Cheng Lang used all their savings for the down payment on their new home. During the renovation, she finally brought home the fridge she had long desired. Seeing its massive size, Cheng Lang was quite puzzled. But Ling Li smiled and said, “In life, there are many things that need to be kept fresh.”
Cheng Lang, a technician, often had to work overtime. Their new home was in the suburbs, so the couple had to leave early and return late every day, working hard yet sweetly together. No matter how busy or tired Ling Li was during the day, she would always cook a couple of home-style dishes after work, waiting to have dinner with Cheng Lang.
At first, Cheng Lang felt very happy and a bit guilty, but as time went on, he began to take it for granted. While the passion of their newlywed days still lingered, their lives had already become filled with the mundane routine of daily chores.
One Saturday, the young couple went shopping at a nearby supermarket to stock up on food and household supplies for the upcoming week. This was when the fridge really came into play. Meats needed to be frozen; yogurt had to be refrigerated; vegetables had to go in the middle shelf’s crisper; even her cosmetics occupied a significant space.
As Ling Li organized the fridge, Cheng Lang came over and suddenly wrinkled his nose, saying, “What’s that weird smell?” Ling Li replied, “Things left too long, if you’re not careful, they all go bad.” Seeing the look of regret on his wife’s face, Cheng Lang seemed to be lost in thought.
That day after work, Ling Li changed into her home clothes as usual and prepared to make dinner. When she opened the fridge, she was greeted by a large bouquet of roses and a mango cheesecake—her favorites! Next to the cake was a card with Cheng Lang’s handwriting: “Dear, if my shelf life were a hundred years, my love for you would be a million years. But perhaps our love’s freshness lasts only twenty years. So from today, I will put my love for you in the fridge, for you to use anytime in the years to come.”
Cheng Lang hugged Ling Li from behind. She smiled quietly, and they both understood that in ordinary life, even love needs to be kept fresh.
