Marriage romance: Keeping Love Fresh

Before marrying Cheng Lang, Ling Li had her eye on a large-capacity refrigerator.

Shortly after their wedding, Ling Li gave up their planned honeymoon trip to the Maldives. Instead, she and Cheng Lang used all their savings to make a down payment on a new house. During the renovation, she finally fulfilled her wish and brought home that much-coveted refrigerator.

Seeing its massive size, Cheng Lang was puzzled. Ling Li just smiled and said, “In daily life, there are many things that need to stay fresh.”

Cheng Lang was a technician and often had to work overtime. Their new home was in the suburbs, so the couple had to leave early and return late every day, tired but happy. No matter how busy and exhausted Ling Li was during the day, she would always cook a couple of simple dishes after work and wait for Cheng Lang to have dinner together.

At first, Cheng Lang felt very happy and a little guilty, but over time, he started to take it for granted.

The initial passion of their marriage still lingered, but their days were now filled with the mundane routine of daily life.

One Saturday, the couple went to a nearby supermarket to buy groceries and household items for the following week. Now, the refrigerator came in very handy. Meats needed to be frozen, yogurt had to be refrigerated, vegetables were placed in the crisper drawer, and even Ling Li’s cosmetics occupied a significant space.

As Ling Li was organizing the refrigerator, Cheng Lang came over and wrinkled his nose, saying, “What’s that strange smell?” Ling Li replied, “If you leave things for too long, they go bad before you realize it.” Cheng Lang looked at his wife’s regretful expression and seemed to ponder something.

That day, when Ling Li returned home from work, she changed into her home clothes and started to prepare dinner, as usual. Opening the refrigerator, she was greeted by a large bouquet of roses and a mango cheesecake – her favorites!

Next to the cake was a card with Cheng Lang’s handwriting: “Dear, if my shelf life is a hundred years, my love for you will be a thousand years. But perhaps our love’s freshness only lasts twenty years, so starting today, I will put my love for you in the refrigerator, for you to take anytime in the years to come.”

Cheng Lang hugged Ling Li from behind. She smiled quietly, and they both understood that even in ordinary life, love needs to be kept fresh.
