Love Story of Two Sisters
In a clear pond lived a pair of sisters. The elder sister, Toad, was very diligent. Whenever there were pests in the fields, she would go and catch them, never complaining or feeling tired. However, the younger sister, Frog, was the opposite. At the mention of work, she would frown. If her friends invited her to a party, she would spend half the day getting herself ready.
One day, Frog was walking alone in the grass. She thought to herself, “Why am I so beautiful, yet no one appreciates it?” Then she had another thought, “My sister is so ugly and lives by my side. Surely, her appearance has ruined my reputation!” As she pondered, she couldn’t help but mutter to herself, “I have an idea! I’ll ask Toad to walk with me. Just imagine how good it will make me look…”
Frog forcefully pulled Toad along, smiling and saying, “Dear sister, won’t you walk with me just this once?” Toad couldn’t resist her sister’s pleading and finally agreed. The two sisters had just stepped onto the road when a group of young goats approached. They whispered to each other, “How mismatched these sisters are! One is beautiful, and the other is ugly!”
A pig, passing by, remarked, “This comparison makes the beautiful one even more beautiful, and the ugly one even uglier.” With that, the pig wiggled his short tail and added, “Last time, people said I was ugly, but compared to her, I’m three times more beautiful!” A magpie sitting in a tree joined in, “It’s like a beautiful flower stuck in a pile of cow dung!” Everyone burst into laughter.
As the laughter died down, one of the young goats added, “Her body is covered in swollen blisters, making anyone lose their appetite just by looking at her.” “Exactly!” parroted a parrot. Frog was secretly delighted, but an old ox grazing by the roadside found the situation a bit too much. He raised his voice and spoke earnestly, “Don’t just judge her by her looks. She’s very useful! First, her appearance helps her camouflage, making it hard for other animals to spot her.
Second, she is a guardian of crops, an expert at catching pests! Third, the bumps on her body aren’t swollen blisters; they’re filled with fluid that can be sprayed at enemies to poison them.” Upon hearing this, Frog was no longer pleased and dragged Toad away. Without even returning home, Toad went straight to catch more pests. Meanwhile, Frog was busy dressing up, trying on clothes in front of the mirror, as she had a party to attend that night!
Days passed, then years. The beauty-loving Frog relied entirely on the bugs her sister caught to eat. But later, Toad moved away, and with no one to take care of her, Frog became thinner and thinner until she turned into a dried-up, withered old frog.
