Little Owl Story Can’t Sleep
The little owl could live on its own now and had made its home in a big tree.
Nightfall came, and the little owl was excited—finally, it could do what its parents used to do, no longer needing to stay home every night like a good kid.
Hmm, what should it do first? How about singing a song?
“Woo woo woo, woo woo woo…” The joyful singing floated through the woods.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!” One house after another shut their windows and turned off the lights.
A small head poked out from a hole in the tree trunk; it was the home of the squirrel neighbor.
“That’s so awful! Can’t you let others rest? Could you go sing somewhere else?” The little squirrel covered its ears, looking very uncomfortable.
The little owl felt embarrassed and flew to the pond in the field, where the frogs often held karaoke sessions, singing loudly every night.
The little owl began to sing again: “Woo woo woo, woo woo woo…”
Suddenly, all the frogs went silent and jumped into the water with a “plop plop.”
“Why did everyone stop singing?”
“Karaoke ends tonight!” A frog poked its head out of the water, said a word, and immediately sank back down.
“Hmph! No one wants to hear me sing? Fine, I won’t sing!”
The little owl flew back home but still couldn’t sleep. It flew around the forest, trying to see who was still awake. It really wanted to find a friend to chat with and share its excitement!
It spotted a small house with the lights still on and quietly flew to the windowsill, pressing its face against the glass to peek inside.
It was the rabbit’s house. The little rabbit was wearing earphones and doing some fitness exercises to the beat of the music. It had to practice well for its performance tomorrow.
“Bang bang bang!” The little owl knocked hard on the window.
The little rabbit looked up and saw a big dark figure on the windowsill, with two eyes as round as ping pong balls and as bright as flashlights.
“Ahhh!” The little rabbit dove straight under the covers.
The little owl had scared the rabbit terribly and flew back up into the big tree, sulking. It didn’t want to go home, but it couldn’t sing, no one would chat with it, so what could it do?
“Rustle rustle…” Someone was moving below. The little owl perked up, its radar-like ears standing tall, and its flashlight-like round eyes wide open. It quickly tracked down the source of the sound.
Aha! It was a big rat, sneaking around doing something. The little owl spread its wings and silently swooped down.
“Eeek!” The big rat was so frightened when the owl appeared that its soul almost flew out of its body.
“What are you doing?” asked the little owl.
“I, I… I’m playing hide and seek!”
“Great! I want to play hide and seek too!” The little owl excitedly flapped its wings.
“Uh, okay!” The big rat secretly wiped its sweat, “I’ll hide, and you come find me. Remember, only start looking after you hear ‘1, 2, 3’!”
“No problem, no problem, you go hide quickly!” The little owl couldn’t wait.
The big rat immediately scurried into the darkness, secretly relieved. “Luckily, I bumped into a silly owl. Haha, I’m off to steal food now. You can wait and count ‘1, 2, 3’ all you want!”
The little owl stayed in place, waiting and waiting. Suddenly, it heard from the rabbit’s house: “1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3…” The little rabbit had started practicing again.
Great! Now it could finally go find the big rat!
The big rat had just come out of a house with a sack of food on its back, but before it could escape, the owl caught it red-handed.
“Got you! Huh, why are you carrying food?” The little owl suddenly realized, “Oh, you’re a thief!”
From then on, the little owl found something fun to do. Every night, it went out to catch rats, which was just as fun as playing hide and seek.
After a while, there were fewer thieves in the forest. Who was responsible for this? No one knew!
Because the little owl was busy every night, and during the day, it hid at home to sleep. No one knew what it did when it couldn’t sleep.
